  2. Rule of Thirds • Compositional rule of thumb in visual arts • Image divided into 9 equal parts • Two equally spaced horizontal lines • Two equally spaced vertical lines • Important compositional elements should fall on these lines or their intersections.

  3. Rule of Thirds • It is said that aligning these subjects on these points and lines adds more energy, and focus on the image. • Makes image more interesting.

  4. Reasons • Provides flow in the image • Keeps image from creating a horizon to “cut” the image in half. • Keep individuals from placing objects directly in the center.

  5. In relation to video • Place a person or figure along one of the vertical lines • When filming a moving object/person… There is typically more room to the front of the person, rather than being centered or leading the shot.
