The earliest currency notes in India were issued by private and semi-government banks like Bank of Hindostan. • These old notes of India were issued separately for different presidencies like Bombay, Bengal and Madras.   3. British India notes were issued after the Paper Currency Act came into effect 1861. Notes issued in the Queen Victoria Series featured a portrait of Queen Victoria and featured designs only on one side. • The underprint series of currency notes of India was introduced in the year 1867 as many notes from the earlier series were being duplicated.
