Reading

  • Teacher will discuss compare and contrast by creating an anchor chart with students.

  • Teacher will read Cinderella and Yeh-Shen. Discuss similarities and differences among the characters, setting, and plot.

  • Students will create a venn diagram comparing and contrasting the two main characters in both texts.

  • Teacher will discuss with students how to use Galileo to research information and take notes on China and historical figures from there.

  • Students will use notes to start rough draft of informational writing piece.

  • Students will then edit, revise, and write the final draft.

Comprehension

  • Teacher will discuss how to sequence events by creating a chart on using a scenario (brushing your teeth)

  • Teacher will reread Yeh-Shen. Discuss important events that happen in the beginning, middle, and end and how it is important that these events are in this order.

  • Students will sequence the story using the graphic organizer to the right.

  • Teacher will model how to first provide a compliment, provide suggestions, and then correcting mistakes when peer reviewing.

  • Students will switch papers with a partner and begin the peer review process.

  • Teacher will demonstrate how to use the vocabulary prediction chart. Teacher will make a table with the following headings: word, prediction, after reading, clue words.

  • Teacher will demonstrate how to use this chart using a Chinese vocabulary word.

  • Students will then be given a word to complete vocabulary prediction chart.

  • Students will learn and practice how to say these Chinese words.
