  1. Monday, January 3rd • Set up notebook page 12: The Muslim World • LEFT SIDE: How did Islam begin as a religion, and what role did Muhammad play in its rise? • On a piece of paper (can be half), explain what you remember about Islam(We will be doing a passing quick write with this).

Review: Flow Chart of Comprehension-Monitoring Behaviors • Use highlighter or underline with a pen to mark areas of importance or reading behaviors you catch yourself doing. • Turn to Chapter 10:1on page 263 • Begin reading under “The Prophet Muhammad” on page 264 until the end of the chapter or time is called. • Stop yourself every time you stop comprehending and follow the flow chart. • Return to your notebook and explain what you learned about the terms. Answer the essential question

Tuesday, January 4th • Set up notebook page 13: The Muslim World Part 2 • LEFT SIDE: • 1) Describe how Muhammad’s successors spread Islam • 2) List conflicts within the Umayyad state • 3) Explain how rivalries split Islam • RIGHT SIDE: • You will be placed into 3 groups with one section from Chapter 10:2 (269-272). This is where you will need to take notes on your section.

  5. Newscast • In your assigned group, you will be presenting a newscast on what happened in your section. You will need to assign the following: • Researchers • Writers • Reporters • Anchors • Everyone is responsible for writing details about the section in their notebook. • Go back and answer the questions on the LEFT side of your notebook.

Wednesday, January 5th:Muslim Culture • On the LEFT side on page 14 in your notebook, write the question, “What were the Muslims able to do to combine and preserve the cultures of many peoples, and advance learning in a variety of areas?” • On the RIGHT side of page 14 in your notebook, you will be inserting your brochure about Baghdad.

Chapter 10:3: Muslim Culture You will be creating a brochure on Baghdad to encourage 80th century scholars and artists to move to Baghdad • You must include the following: • Picture & color • Your heading on back • Catchy title or slogan • Explain each of the following: • The city of Baghdad (p. 273) • 4 Social Classes (p. 274) • Role of Women (p. 274) • Astronomy (p. 275) • Literature (p. 276) • Art & Architecture (pp. 276-277) • Medical Advances (p. 278) • Math & Science (p. 278) • Philosophy & Religion (pp. 278-279)

  8. Thursday, January 6th : The Byzantine Empire • On page 15 of your notebook, on the LEFT write the following question: “How did the Byzantine empire endure for over 1,000 years?” • On the RIGHT, you will be creating a timeline. • Skim Chapter 11:1: pp. 301-306 • Answer question
