Big Decisions Overall • Big Decisions is framework of entire curriculum • Enjoyed by the teachers and students • Under consistent review • As a group, we identified gaps and clarification of information • Videos already incorporated have some out-dated information • Gaps in missing information, areas that need additional teaching aides, and inclusion of whole lessons

  5. Lesson 4 – STDs • Addition of middle school’s “Choosing the Best” STD pictures to Big Decisions lesson • Reemphasize to students physical signs of STDs • Catch students who have not seen “Choosing the Best” or been through any HSAE programs • NEISD Approved pictures

  6. “Straight Talk – The Truth About STDs” Video • Clarify a video comment • In this scene, Michael talks about not having a vaccine against HPV for males • There is currently a vaccine for males to protect against HPV.

  7. “Abstinence First – Teen Birth Control Decisions” Video • Clarify a video comment • Male condom barrier methods suggest using a spermicide with a condom, placing drops inside the tip of condom • This is an outdated practice and not recommended anymore by the CDC

Re-Evaluation of the Scope & Sequence Current Change • Day 9 is an entire class period reserved for self exam videos • These videos do not require an entire day and can fit anywhere in the days, when time is available for teaching • NEISD does not cover any media influences on teens and their sexuality • As a group, we felt this issue is in need of discussion with students • For Day 9 – bring back Big Decision’s Lesson 7: Friends, Culture, Media and Sex • Already approved BD lesson • ACTION ITEM: Add in video clip from ABC News on media influences and teen pregnancy ABC News - Media and Teen Pregnancy

Self Exam Videos Current Change • Nurses come to classes, show the video, and are available for student questions • Coordination with multiple classes and nurses’ schedule is not easy • Have to combine classes with large numbers • Takes an entire day out of teaching • Sometimes are missed all together • ACTION ITEM: Allowing the teachers to show these videos • Teachers have already created respectful relationship with students • Allows for videos to be shown at any time during the curriculum • FAQs for teachers to use as pointers for preview and if questions should arise

Self Exam Videos continued • Testicular Self Exam Video - “Jason’s Story,” information is updated, good message • ACTION ITEM: Add video for Men’s Breast Exam • Men's Breast Self Exam • Breast Self Exam Video – Susan G. Komen story • Information largely emphasizes mammograms • ACTION ITEM: Change the video for more info on self screening, not changing the message of information about screenings • Women's Breast Self Exam

Self Exam Videos Continued • ACTION ITEM: The Inclusion of a handout/pamphlet from the ACS • Give students a take home reminder of how to self exam • ACTION ITEM: Addition of Silicone models as teaching aides • Both male and female models • One or multiple sets per campus • We teach students to look and feel for lumps or irregularities. This will help them identify exactly what “irregularities” might feel like. • Encourages all levels of learning

  14. “The Miracle of Life” Pilot • Lee High School is working on implementation of this video pilot • Future idea is to include “The Miracle Of Life” in with the High School HSAE curriculum • This video is approved for NEISD Teen Pregnancy class, could be beneficial for all students • Student results from pilot will be our indicator • Pilot to happen this Spring
