  1. EOG Strategies and Advice Mrs. Haring

  2. Pretest • Go to bed at a reasonable time the night before. • Get up on time…no rushing around. • Eat a good breakfast…you can’t have any food or drink during the test. Lunch will be late that day. Eat enough to carry you through the test. • Do not bring your phone or any electronics that day. • Use restroom during homeroom. • Wear comfortable clothing—no PJ’s! I would suggest you bring a sweatshirt or sweater. You know the rooms can be cold!

  3. Relax • Never get uptight about a test. You are prepared. There is no doubt in my mind that everyone will do well. If you don’t, I promise it will not be the end of your world. RELAX, RELAX, RELAX! • I promise, I will be proud of you if you really did your very best work. I can’t ask for more than that. • Don’t grip the pencil too hard. You don’t want hand cramp!

  4. Runners Strategy • Use the runners strategy for each and every passage. Never skip a step and never skip doing it on any passage. I WILL COME AND HUNT YOU DOWN IF YOU DON’T USE YOUR READING STRATEGIES!!!

  5. Memorize and Use • R- Read the title and predict • U- Underline key words/clues in the question— • What are they asking me to do? • N- Notice any numbered paragraphs • N- Note important details as you read • E- Enclose key words/phrases • R- Reread all questions, cover choices, answer in head, uncover choices—Which one stands out? Cross out the wrong answers. • S-Select the best answer after you analyze each and every answer choice.

  6. EOG Vocabulary • http://quizlet.com/37238248/eog-vocabulary-flash-cards/ • You must know all the above vocabulary words prior to the test. Study them, know them! If you know what they are asking in the question, you will more than likely know what to look for in the answers.

  7. Don’t worry about time • We are required to put time frames on the board. Don’t pay any attention to that. You have up to four hours to take the test. This is more time than you will ever use. TAKE YOUR TIME. TAKE YOUR TIME. TAKE YOUR TIME. • If you feel tired, take deep breaths. Give your brain a one minute rest between each passage. • Get up and stretch at every break…even if you don’t feel you have to.

  8. Circle your answers in the book too! • Don’t just bubble the Scantron. Make sure you circle the answer in the test book too. It is a good practice in case you make a mistake with the bubbling. It will be easy to find the mistake, if you mark the answer in the book too.

  9. Every 10 • Check to make sure you are on the right question every 10 questions. If you are misaligned you need to raise your hand and ask for help. If you mark your answers in the book, it will be easy to find the mistake.

  10. Eliminate answers • Always review each and every answer before you select the best answer. • Ask yourself, what are they asking me to do? • Cross out the wrong answers. Circle the best answer in the book. Then bubble the correct answer on the answer sheet. • There will be more than one correct answer many times. You have to pick the best answer.

  11. When You Feel Done • Go back to check your answers that you feel you did not know. Sometimes time away from a question will give you a chance to see the question in a different light. Put a star next to the questions you want to go back and double check. • Darken all answers bubbled. Make sure every question is bubbled. • Erase any stray marks on the bubble sheet. • Stay quiet until we are all done.
