Group discussions: planning of research activities

This project focuses on planning and implementing research activities for three PhD theses in Niger and Burkina Faso. The aim is to explore land systems science, resilience, vulnerability, adaptation, and risk in order to inform policy recommendations. The project includes field work in multiple sites and collaboration with other components of the LaSyRe project.

Activities planned 2 (3) PhD Niger, UoN: 1 PhD duration March 2010-2013 Field work in Goudemria DK, UoC: 1 PhD duration January 2010-2013 Field work in 3 sites Oudalan BF, Partial focus for 1 PhD duration 2010-2013 (partly with component III) = case to be determined (will consider Aribinda as option) Rapport after 6 months (literature, progress) for mutual infirmation

  4. Theoretical platform for the work The PhD theses will aim at taking a shared point of departure in the theoretical literature related to land systems science and resilience, vulnerability, adaptation and risk. To facilitate exhange of ideas and harmonise definition of concepts the LaSyRe web site will be used to store key publications that address this issue

  6. Outcome 3 PhD theses in 2013 Policy briefs of pertinent findings Activities in Cp IV commit themselves to translate key research finding to policy relevant (focused messages) that are suitable to be presented in short policy briefs

  7. Interaction and exchange with other LaSyRe components • Are prepared to deliver concrete gound truth on request to other components upon request • expects to be able to have rainfall data and high resolution satellite data (process for exchange to be determined) • PhD site in Burkina to be selcted with component III and INERA (process to be determined)

  8. Immediate action within component IV DA, Bouzou Moussa, and Aissata to send annotated list of available document of immediate interest for this research component to Reenberg (deadline end of March) Reenberg to send reference on Aribinda to DA Ibrahim Bouzou Moussa to provide detailed time table for PhD field work E.D. DA to provide detailed time table for PhD field work

  9. Cross component coordination • Process for exchange of material (eg rainfall data, satellite images) • PhD site in Burkina to be selcted with component III and INERA (process to be determined)
