  1. REFINED BY FIRE JoLynn Gower 493-6151 352-2458 jgower@guardingthetruth.org

  2. WORD FOR THE JOURNEY • Matthew 7:21-23  "Not everyone who says to Me, 'Lord, Lord,' will enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father who is in heaven will enter. Many will say to Me on that day, 'Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in Your name, and in Your name cast out demons, and in Your name perform many miracles?’ And then I will declare to them, 'I never knew you; DEPART FROMME, YOU WHO PRACTICE LAWLESSNESS.' • Does: poieo: to perform (especially as a poet) • Practice: ergazomai: to perform or work • Matthew 7:13-14  "Enter through the narrow gate; for the gate is wide and the way is broad that leads to destruction, and there are many who enter through it. For the gate is small and the way is narrow that leads to life, and there are few who find it.”

  3. THE WAR • Thoughts that won’t leave us • Behaviors we can’t overcome • It’s a war…spiritual warfare • How Jesus handled Satan : Matthew 4:1-11 • Lust of the flesh: Jesus was hungry…stones to bread • Lust of the eyes: All the kingdoms your eyes can see • Boastful pride of life: Angels will catch you if you jump • Areas: physical need; desire to be recognized; desire to have it all…even if it involves a shortcut • Parallels with the original temptation: the fruit was good for food, delightful to the eyes, desirable to make one wise…so wise that you become like God, knowing good from evil

  4. THE SPIRIT’S SWORD • Ephesians 6:17  And take THE HELMET OF SALVATION, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. • Helmet: perikephaleia: the protection of the head while the mind is undergoing renovation • Sword: machaira: a short sword or dagger; used for up-close and personal fighting • Word of God: rhematheou: the spoken word; a portion of scripture useful to wage a truth-battle • Jesus said…. • Everything compared to the reality of God’s revealed truth; Satan perverts, twists, omits, adds, quotes out of context

  5. WHERE TROUBLE STARTS • John 4:1-4  Therefore when the Lord knew that the Pharisees had heard that Jesus was making and baptizing more disciples than John (although Jesus Himself was not baptizing, but His disciples were), He left Judea and went away again into Galilee.  And He had to pass through Samaria. • He could have walked around Samaria; the spiritual conflict in Samaria was amazing in a “not good” way • The expulsion of Manasseh by Nehemiah for an unlawful marriage, and his building of the Samaritan temple on Mt. Gerizim by permission of Darius Nothus, took place about 409 b.c. • Nehemiah 13:28  Even one of the sons of Joiada, the son of Eliashib the high priest, was a son-in-law of Sanballat the Horonite, so I drove him away from me.

  6. EARLIER ROOTS • Ezra 4:1-3  Now when the enemies of Judah and Benjamin heard that the people of the exile were building a temple to the LORD God of Israel, they approached Zerubbabel and the heads of fathers‘ households, and said to them, "Let us build with you, for we, like you, seek your God; and we have been sacrificing to Him since the days of Esarhaddon king of Assyria, who brought us up here.” But Zerubbabel and Jeshua and the rest of the heads of fathers‘ households of Israel said to them, "You have nothing in common with us in building a house to our God; but we ourselves will together build to the LORD God of Israel, as King Cyrus, the king of Persia has commanded us." • Satan uses hurts to divide rather than unite

  7. THE SAMARITAN WOMAN • John 4:7-10  There came a woman of Samaria to draw water. Jesus said to her, "Give Me a drink.” For His disciples had gone away into the city to buy food.  Therefore the Samaritan woman *said to Him, "How is it that You, being a Jew, ask me for a drink since I am a Samaritan woman?" (For Jews have no dealings with Samaritans.) Jesus answered and said to her, "If you knew the gift of God, and who it is who says to you, 'Give Me a drink,' you would have asked Him, and He would have given you living water." • John 4:18-22  The woman said to Him, "Sir, I perceive that You are a prophet. Our fathers worshiped in this mountain, and you people say that in Jerusalem is the place where men ought to worship.” Jesus said to her, "Woman, believe Me, an hour is coming when neither in this mountain nor in Jerusalem will you worship the Father. You worship what you do not know; we worship what we know, for salvation is from the Jews.”

  8. WHERE IS YOUR FOCUS? • Satan wants us to focus on hurts • God wants us to focus on Him • Ephesians 6:18 With all prayer and petition pray at all times in the Spirit, and with this in view, be on the alert with all perseverance and petition for all the saints… • Prayer and petition:proseucheand deesis • In the Spirit: en pneumati • Alert: agrupneo: wakeful; watchful; heightened senses • Luke 21:36  "But keep on the alert at all times, praying you may have strength to escape all these things that are about to take place, and to stand before the Son of Man.” • 1 Peter 5:8  Be of sober spirit, be on the alert. Your adversary, the devil, prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. • alert: gregoreo: keep watching

  9. IN CONTEXT • Disobedience sometimes comes from taking God’s Word out of context • We must be careful not to obey a faulty interpretation of God’s Word • Psalm 119:9-11 How can a young man keep his way pure? By keeping it according to Your word. With all my heart I have sought You; do not let me wander from Your commandments. Your word I have treasured in my heart, that I may not sin against You. • Psalm 119:27-29  Make me understand the way of Your precepts, so I will meditate on Your wonders. My soul weeps because of grief; strengthen me according to Your word. Remove the false way from me, and graciously grant me Your law. • It is deceptive to take God’s Word out of context and build a ministry around it; many cults begin this way

  10. DEVIL’S TACTICS: WRONG CONTEXT • Matthew 21:21 And Jesus answered and said to them, "Truly I say to you, if you have faith and do not doubt, you will not only do what was done to the fig tree, but even if you say to this mountain, 'Be taken up and cast into the sea,' it will happen.” (taksh) • Doubt: diakrino: to judge; waiver between two decisions • Matthew 18:19 "Again I say to you, that if two of you agree on earth about anything that they may ask, it shall be done for them by My Father who is in heaven.” • Romans 8:28  And we know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose. • 1 John 4:16  We have come to know and have believed the love which God has for us. God is love, and the one who abides in love abides in God, and God abides in him. • Love: agape: a selfless, sacrificial love of the mind, will, and reason as well as the heart and affections

  11. DECEPTION • 2 Peter 2:1-3  But false prophets also arose among the people, just as there will also be false teachers among you, who will secretly introduce destructive heresies, even denying the Master who bought them, bringing swift destruction upon themselves.  Many will follow their sensuality, and because of them the way of the truth will be maligned; and in their greed they will exploit you with false words; their judgment from long ago is not idle, and their destruction is not asleep. • Zechariah 13:4 Also it will come about in that day that the prophets will each be ashamed of his vision when he prophesies, and they will not put on a hairy robe in order to deceive; • Revelation 13:1  And the dragon stood on the sand of the seashore. Then I saw a beast coming up out of the sea, having ten horns and seven heads…

  12. THE ULTIMATE DECEPTION • Revelation 17:11-13  "The beast which was and is not, is himself also an eighth and is one of the seven, and he goes to destruction. The ten horns which you saw are ten kings who have not yet received a kingdom, but they receive authority as kings with the beast for one hour. These have one purpose, and they give their power and authority to the beast.” • Revelation 13:11-13  Then I saw another beast coming up out of the earth; and he had two horns like a lamb and he spoke as a dragon. He exercises all the authority of the first beast in his presence. And he makes the earth and those who dwell in it to worship the first beast, whose fatal wound was healed. He performs great signs, so that he even makes fire come down out of heaven to the earth in the presence of men.
