Role and Scope of Practice • 2008 Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans • Increase activity levels to improve health. • It is recommended to perform at least 150 minutes per week of moderate intensity physical activity* • Walk 30 minutes most days of the week is suggested by the Surgeon General. • Health Benefits • Reduce risk for multiple diseases at all age levels • Improve cardiovascular and respiratory fitness levels • Improve health biomarkers • Improve body composition

Health Care Field • Personal trainers commonly work with multiple other fields associated with health care • Working with other specialists help improve the overall health of the client. • Credentialed Professions include • Rehabilitation, nutrition, physician/nurse practitioner, mental health, alternative healthcare, and trainers/coaches/instructors • Important for personal trainers to not perform activities associated with other professions as it is outside of the personal trainers scope of practice

Scope of Practice • What can a personal trainer do? • Refer clients to the appropriate health care professional. • Identify risk factors for disease through assessment screens • Recommend general information around nutrition provided it aligns with www.choosemyplate.gov and the MyPlate Food Guidance System.* • Education clients about the benefits of a balanced diet but do not recommend any specific diet or foods.* • Coach clients on exercise technique and program design • Determine exercise limitations through the screening process

Scope of Practice • What a Personal Trainer cannot do • Diagnose* illnesses, injuries or disease • Prescribe medication, treatment or therapies • Prescribe diets or supplements: Registered Dietician* is the main person to provide a meal plan • Rehabilitate* clients who are injured or post surgery • Counsel clients regarding to issues in their life • Refer to the client as a patient • Memorize Table 1-2 and 1-3

Scope of Practice • Although personal trainers do not fall under the professions that are required to use HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act) it is important to stick to HIPAA standards. • Always ensure the clients confidentiality around their medical information by storing information in a locked file cabinet or password protected electronic file.* • The client is in charge of who has access to medical history. • Do not share information about your clients unless you have a written note indicating permission to do so.

  7. Continuing Education • Recommended 20 hours of exercise science, health, or fitness related education every 2 years to retain your ACE CPT Certification. • The most credible source of information regarding fitness and health comes from peer reviewed scientific journals. They are also the best place to seek continuing education.
