  1. NPP All Hands Meeting 9 November 2018

  2. Overview • Safety • Budget News • FY2018 Performance • Recent Events • Awards • New Leaders • Susan McKeon (NPP BOM) • Kathleen Amm (SMD Head) • Cynthia Hernandez (NPP HRM) • FY 2019 PEMP Notable Outcomes • Inclusion & Diversity • United Way Campaign • Career Development • Mentoring (Maureen Canter) • LOSA (Yugang Tan) • Educational Programs (Noel Blackburn)

  3. Safety • FY2018 was not a great year for BNL (and NPP) • BNL safety record is at the lower end of national labs • While most injuries are not severe and often not even work related, the incidence rate is unacceptably high • FY2019 did not get off to a good start • Already 3 DART cases in C-AD • Common aspect: Lack of attention in seemingly innocuous situations (getting up from a chair, exiting a parked car, stumbling over a low mounted pipe) • Keep your head in the game – ALWAYS • WE MUST DO BETTER!

  4. Safety “Safety isn’t just a program—it’s a way of life. It’s the foundation for building and maintaining trust and public confidence in our organization. Creating a safety culture requires continuing communication and reinforcement at every level of the organization. Health and safety are not strategies or business initiatives. They are a moral code and a behavior that is only visible through the actions and deeds we initiate and the change in focus and attitude we create.” Words of a Business Leader

  5. Budget News • We have a (good) FY 2019 Budget ! • NP: $690M – BNL: $205.6M – RHIC ops $192.75M (FY18: $187.5M) • HEP: $980M – BNL: $80.4M • HEP budget growth dominated by construction projects (LBNF) • Outlook for FY 2020 remains uncertain • POTUS asked for 5% across the board cut • NP guidance for RHIC budget flat with FY 2018 • HEP guidance: prepare for -3% or even less • Divided Congress usually is not positive for budgets; growing deficits do not help….

  6. FY 2018 Performance • FY 2018 was a very good year (except safety): • Funding exceeded $300M for the first time • RHIC completed a run chock-full with superlatives • Successful CD-1 review for sPHENIX and US-ATLAS HL-LHC • Completed searches: SMD Head (K. Amm), BOM (S. McKeon) • Search for new DALD for HEP in interview phase • Congratulations to all NPP staff! • Lab Infrastructure (SLI) projects: • $30M for Core Facility Revitalization Project (Bldg. 725) • $8.5M for refurbishment of Metallurgical Hot Cells (225Ac)

  7. Recent Events Secretary of Energy Rick Perry visited BNL on October 26, 2018 completing his tour of all 17 DOE national labs (“He saved the best for last”). He visited the STAR Hall 1006 and received briefings on RHIC, the EIC, and the Medical Isotope Program.

  8. Awards • 2018 Secretary of Energy's Achievement Award: BNL STAR Group • 2018 BNL S&T Awards: E. Aschenauer, R. Venugopalan • 2018 BNL Engineering Awards: S. Dimaiuta, K. Mernick, S. Polizzo Secretary Perry presents the 2018 Achievement Award to the BNL STAR Group

  10. FY2019 PEMP Notable Outcomes • HEP: By February 2019 the lab should provide specific responses to the lab-specific recommendations provided in both the 2018 BNL Institutional Review and the 2018 HEP comparative reviews of the General Accelerator R&D, Intensity Frontier, and Theoretical Research programs. • HEP: By December 2018, provide an operations plan that will support at least 3 training quenches/per day five days a week. Include in the operations plan a tracking methodology that will identify when the facility is idle and why it is idle. Specifically, identify/hire additional cryo operators needed to meet the goal of 3 training quenches per day for 5 days per week as soon as possible and agree on a cost sharing plan with project management of HL-LHC AUP.

  11. FY2019 PEMP Notable Outcomes • HEP: As part of the response to the HEP Institutional Review, BNL management should articulate an externally reviewed vision by March 2019 for the future of BNL HEP that builds on the multi-program capabilities of the lab as well as the particular expertise and leadership of lab staff. • NP/BHSO: Effectively plan, execute, and successfully deliver SC projects equal to or less than $50 million that have been delegated to the BNL Laboratory Director by SC under DOE Order 413.3b [Super Pioneering High Energy Nuclear Interaction eXperiment (sPHENIX)].  Clearly demonstrate successful accomplishment of all work planned for FY 2019.

  12. NPP Inclusion and Diversity Council

  13. NPP I&D Council MISSION • Attract, advance and retain an Inclusive & Diverse workforce that is representative of the available pool of candidates. • Promote a respectful and supportive workplace where people of all identities (i.e. gender, race, sexual orientation, age, cultural background) and experiences are welcomed and integrated, so everybody contributes at full potential with their talent and unique input to the NPP directorate and, by extent, to the BNL mission.
