  1. Understanding Light- Notes

  2. Reflection of light: Mirrors and smooth objects reflect light to form clear images.

  3. Refraction of light: When light waves bend they separate into the ROY G BIV colors. Prisms, Diffraction Gratings, and Spectroscopes are tools used to refract light.

  4. Transmission of light: Light waves pass through space or a medium. Materials that can transmit light are either transparent or translucent. Transparent- clear material that allows light to pass easily. The image is not distorted. Translucent- material that appears “hazy” or “foggy”. The image is distorted.

  5. Absorption of light: When objects absorb light they become warmer because the energy is not “passed” on. Materials that cannot transmit light are opaque. Opaque- material that transmits no light.

  6. How do we perceive objects as having color? The wavelength of light reflected off an object will be the color we see. Ex: A red apple….reflects red light Absorbs _OY G BIV

  7. What about that black cat? ROY G BIV is absorbed (all light) No light is reflected back to our eye

  8. Black objects:absorb all wavelengths of light (ROY G BIV) White objects:reflect all wavelengths of light (ROY G BIV)
