  2. Leading up to War.. • Political developments stemming from Syrian change of government • A lot of the conflict also came from the previous 1948 war. • The formation of the PLO (Palestine Liberation Organization) in 1964 • In April of 1967, Syria and Israel engaged in an air battle over Syria.

  3. Key Players • Gamal Abel Nasser: Arab leader, second president of Egypt. In 1952 led his country in the Egyptian Revolution. • Hafez al-Assad: President of Syria, led Syria through the war. Syria had half of it’s air force planes destroyed on the ground and lost one seventh of it’s territory to the Israelis. • Leonid Brezhnev:Soviet Leader, General Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union (1964-1982). In the 60’s he failed to do many things to aid the situation between the East and the West, however during the six day war he proceeded to

Key Battles • 5- On the morning of June 5th, Israeli Air Forces launched a series of raids against Egyptian airfields, attacking 19 bases and destroying 285-309 aircraft. • By evening, Jordan’s air force was wiped out, the Syrians had lost two-thirds of their total air strength, and the Iraqi air force loses several planes. • 6- The Israelis races the Egyptian forces to the Suez canal. The Israeli air-force destroyed many Egyptian tanks and other vehicles, while Israeli ground forces destroyed or captures the rest. Heavy fighting for control of Jerusalem and the West Bank of the River Jordan. • 7- The Israelis won complete control of the Sinai and accepted the UN call for a ceasefire with Egypt. Israelis captures all of Jerusalem. Jordan accepted the UN demand for a ceasefire. • 8- Egypt accepted the call for a ceasefire.

  5. Outcome of the Conflict • Israeli was victorious in the end. They took control of the Gaza Strip and the Sinai Peninsula from Egypt, the West Bank and East Jerusalem from Jordan, and the Golan Heights from Syria. They began to build settlements in the conquered land. • A rise in Palestinian resistance • Palestinian refugees. This includes all the refugees from the Civil War, plus those who fled this fighting, plus any Palestinian resident who was away from home during those six days.
