  1. Cover Letters and Resumes Pre-Employment

  2. Why Write Cover Letters? • The main goal of a cover letter is to obtain an interview • Convinces an employer that you are worth considering for the position • Highlights your ability to communicate in writing and your organizational skills • Shows your professionalism and serious pursuit of a career

  3. 3 Main Parts of CL • Introduction of yourself to your prospective employer • Generate interest in you as a candidate • Convince the potential employer that you are worthy of an interview

  4. TIPS(: • EVERY resume should have a cover letter • Type it in the same font as the resume • The letter should be addressed to a specific person • Never to…whom it may concern! • PROOFREAD several times • Only (1) page in length

  5. Goals of a Resume • Show responsibility and results that relate to the needs of the company • Show accomplishments and abilities • Help you obtain an interview for a position

  6. Resumes • Selecting a resume format is a major decision • Select a format that highlights your strongest features, qualities, expertise • There are (3) types of resumes • Chronological • Functional • Combination or hybrid

  7. Chronological Resume • Presents education and work experience in a reverse chronological order • Most recent to least recent • Shows progressive growth • Most effective if majority of work experience is related to the position • Includes: objective, educational background (most recent listed 1st), employment experience, and activities

  8. Functional Resume • Focuses on skills you have that are related to the position • Effective if work experience is not closely related to job • Career changes or promotions • Includes: objective, educational background, skills, employment experience, and activities • SKILLS should be (3-5) of your strongest related to job

  9. Hybrid Resume • A combination of both resumes styles • Functional and chronological • Skills are identified related to the job • Put in a chronological order (most recent to least) • Combination resumes are effective if at least some of your work experience is related to job and you also want to outline your work skills

  10. TIPS(: • Be honest-no need to stretch the truth • Never list exact dates, just months/years • Don’t list the date you created the resume • May appear outdated • Re-word things to avoid “I statements” • Avoid acronyms or define them for employers
