  4. Picture Perfect Lessons • How are they different? • How do they look in the classroom?

Ducks Don’t Get Wet • K.L.1.2- Compare characteristics of animals in terms of their: structure, growth, changes, movement, basic needs. • 4.L.1.4 Explain how differences among animals of the same population sometimes give individuals an advantage in surviving and reproducing in changing habitats. • 8.L.4.2 Explain the relationship between genetic variation and an organism’s ability to adapt to its environment. • Bio.3.2.3 Explain how the environment can influence the expression of genetic traits.

  6. Ducks Don’t Get Wet • Have you ever seen ducks swimming in a lake?

  7. Text Structure • Look at the way the text in this book is arranged.

  9. What do you think? • If ducks spend so much time in the water, how do you think they keep from getting too cold or wet? • What happens when you spend a lot of time in the water?

  10. Duck Journal • Where is the best place to look for ducks? • Dabbling Ducks • Upending Ducks

  11. Oil and Water • Use the index to find the page numbers where the author describes preening. • Did anyone see a duck preening?

  12. Oil and Water • Put 2 drops of food coloring into your container of water and shake carefully. • Now add the oil to the water and shake carefully. • What happened?

  13. Ducks Don’t Get Wet • What is the difference between a structure and a behavior? • As we read the book, signal when you hear about a structure or a behavior that helps a duck survive.

  14. Let’s Preen! • Place one feather on the table and spray once or twice with water • With the other feather, dip your fingers in the oil and pull the feather through your fingers 2 or 3 times. • Once the feather is coated in oil, spray the feather with water.

  15. What did you observe? • How does the feather coated in oil compare with the feather that was not coated in oil? • On page 6 of your journal, answer the question, Why don’t ducks get wet?

  16. So what do you think? • Is this something your teachers would incorporate in their classroom? • How could this be used to support the science kits/curriculum?
