Why are they so important to life on Earth? • LT:I can identify the organisms within various trophic levels in aquatic ecosystems (such as estuary, wetlands and oceans) . • POU: I will differentiate between plankton, nekton, and benthos. • I will identify the different types of animals in the ocean. • I will identify key properties of Earth’s oceans.

  4. How are estuaries connected to oceanic organisms? • Estuaries provide a nursery grounds for oceanic organisms • Estuaries provide sunlight for oceanic organisms. • Estuaries provide primary food for oceanic organisms. • Estuaries provide excess dissolved oxygen for oceanic organisms

  10. Here is the Energy Web: Suns Energy  Plants, Algae & Photoplankton (“Producers” - do photosynthesis)  Animals & Zooplankton (“Consumers” - Eat to get energy)

  11. Types of Animals in the Ocean Plankton • Plankton = Floating animal (usually one to a few cells) • Nekton = Swimming, maneuvering animals (fish, sharks, seals, etc.) • Benthos = Bottom dweller (on or in the seafloor) Nekton Benthos (ex. Halibut)
