  2. Spanish Colonization • Lead by Onate • Settled southwestern U.S.-New Mexico • Searched for gold & silver • Forced the natives to work and pay taxes • Encomienda: large tracks of land owned by wealthy Spanish settlers in N. America

  3. French Colonization • Lead by Champlain • Found & settled Quebec, Canada • Benefits included river access, fur trade, & survival • Traded with Indians (axes, knives, guns, metal for beaver fur & fish)

  4. English Settlement in the South • Why settle there? • Gold & silver • Indian trade • Religious freedom

  5. Roanoke, Virginia • Why did it fail? • Colonists disappeared • Other group went back to England when 1st group not found

  6. Jamestown, Virginia • Why did it fail? • Colonists did not know how to farm • Found no gold or silver • Relationship with natives was bad (Colonists stole food and forced natives to work)

  7. Maryland • Why was it successful? • Colonists were able to plant crops early on

  8. English Settlement in New England • 1609 Pilgrims leave England for the Netherlands • Called Separatists because they wanted to practice own religion

  9. 1619 Pilgrims get permission to settle Virginia • They pay their own expenses to go

  10. 1620 Mayflower Sails Off Course • Lands in Plymouth Rock, Massachusetts

  11. 1620-1621 Pilgrims found Plymouth Bay Colony • Harsh conditions caused sickness and death. • Indians taught Pilgrims how to farm which lead to success for Pilgrims

  12. Puritans-Mass. Bay Colony • Included churches • Businesses for profit • Cities: Boston & Cambridge • Businesses for trade and other services

Dutch: Base for trade Founded New York English took over for money and trade (Duke of York) Quakers: Founded Pennsylvania Lead by William Penn Wanted and believed in religious freedom, peace, no war, all people are =, & everyone has a little bit of God in them English Settlement in the Middle Colonies
