JECAM ArgentinaSan Antonio de Areco Earth Observation Technologies for Crop Monitoring: A Workshop to Promote Collaborations among GEOGLAM/JECAM/Asia-RiCE 2018 Taichung City, Taiwan 17-20 September, 2018 Diego de Abelleyra, Santiago Verón
Site Description • Purpose of project • Purpose: Evaluation of methodologies for crop type mapping and biophysical parameters estimation from remote sensing • Duration: Since 2010 • Location: Rolling Pampas • Topography Gently slope (<3 %) • Soils: Mollisols. High organic matter content • Field size: 20 Ha • Well Drained soils. • Crop • Crop type and variety • Crop calendar • Climate and weather • Temperate • isohygro regime (1000 mm) • Agricultural methods used • Irrigation < 1%. • No till Agriculture
Objectives • Crop identification and Crop Area Estimation • Yield Prediction and Forecasting • Crop Growth Condition/Stress • Soil Moisture • Crop Residue, Tillage and Crop Cover Mapping • Evaluation of methodologies and new technologies
Earth Observation (EO) Data Received/Used For each Mission/sensor: * • RADARSAT-2 • SAR • Number of scenes: 23 • Challenges: It was possible to re-schedule acquisitions at critical periods * In addition to publically available datasets
In situ and Field survey Data On road surveys • Identification of land use in all fields along the roads • paper sheets, tablets, cameras • Field boundaries using GE and S2 images Original JECAM Area (2010-2018) Expanded Area (2018) Planned (2018/2019) • Challenges Area expansion: • optimal sample spacing • Stratification
SAR related measurements Experimental Sample Units (ESU) Ceptometer Fisheye camera (360) / LAI
Collaboration • Participation in JECAM intercomparisonexperiments: • CroplandClassificationmethods • Spatialsamplingmethods • Data sourcesfor training of croplandclassifications • SAR croptype and biophysicalparametersestimation • NASA Project. Crop yield assessment and mapping by a combined use of Landsat-8, Sentinel-2 and Sentinel-1 images. SergiiSkakun • MapBiomas Project (www.mapbiomas.org ). Land Use annual mapping (Cropland – no cropland classes) in Argentina, Brasil and Paraguay.
Results Crop type map accuracies: Crop rotation analysis
To what extent have the project objectives been met? • Continuous data acquisition over 8 years • 4 years Biophysical variables measurements • Acquisition of multiple satellite platforms (continuity and variety) • On going thesis and publications • Can this approach be called ‘best practice’? • Mapping anually crop type, allow mapping of crop rotations, a tool to describe good practices
Plans for Next Growing Season • Will you hold the course, or modify the approach? • Maintain / increase measuring intensity and on road sampling area. Expand JECAM sites area? • Funding required (to follow a common data collection protocol among sites) • Do you anticipate using the same type/quantity of EO data next year? Y/N • Multifrequency SAR (SAOCOM, ALOS, X band SAR?) • If no, how have your needs changed?
