  4. Believed that God gave her this talent so she just sings. Wanted to use her success to impact people’s lives. Believed that “It isn't where you came from, its where you're going that counts." Believed in helping others and fostering education. Believed that reading was essential to a person’s development. Was very grateful for her success because she knew what struggling was like. Wanted to help the disadvantaged. Had a love of music.

  5. Won thirteen Grammy Awards. “A-Tisket, A-Tasket” put into the Grammy Hall of Fame. Was awarded the National Medal of Arts. Received the Commander of Arts and Letters award from France. Inducted into the Down Beat magazine Hall of Fame. Awarded the Peabody Award for Outstanding Contributions in Music. Received first ASCAP award in recognition of an artist. Received Kennedy Center Honors for her contributions to the arts. Recipient of honorary doctorates from various universities. Received the NAACP Award for lifetime achievement.
