  2. Clash of Cultures • Tension grew in Texas as Americans outnumbered Mexicans. Texans called on volunteers to protect themselves from Santa Anna’s army. Davy Crocket became the fiery leader and was victorious at San Antonio.

  3. What was the Battle of the Alamo? • Santa Anna marched his troops against Crocket to a mission called the Alamo. For 12 long days, the defenders of the Alamo kept Santa Anna’s army at bay with rifle fire. This allowed Texans to buy much needed time to organize.

  4. The Lone Star Republic • During the Battle of the Alamo, Texas declares its independence and elects Sam Houston as its president. Eventually Texas is annexed or taken control of by the US as a slave state.
