  2. Background Information • First Known as the American society for the promotion of temperance • The society was established in Boston • Established on February 3rd 1826 • The organization was co founded by two ministers Dr.Justin Edwards and Lyman Beecher • The society was completely anti catholic • Also called the women's right movement

  3. What Is your Organization? • There were 2,220 organizations in the U.S with 170,000 members who had taken the pledge to stop drinking alcoholic beverages. • Within ten years, there were over 8,000 local groups and more than 1,500,000 members who had decided to take the pledge and stop drinking. • Basically this organization was to get people to stop drinking alcoholic beverages. • People go around talking at a temperance like Mary C.Vaughan • A society all around the world producing pamphlets • Talking about a downfall of drinking alcohol

  4. Leader Lyman • Lyman Beecher was a preacher during the first half of the nineteenth century • He stood out of the other reformers of the temperance period of time • Lyman believed that Catholics have a negative impact on American society and education • He was against slavery but then believed in abolishment (judging people) • In addition he was very good at reviving religion (bringing back religion)

  5. Leader Dr.Justin Edwards • He said that the purpose of the society was to promote temperance while letting alcoholics “die off and rid the world of an amazing evil”. • His goal was to get peoples minds off of drinking and to get on a better path • Also he was a racist man along with Lyman • His quote is basically saying to let the alcoholics try to get their addictions under control and to get rid of their bad thoughts about the world.

  6. Support For Your Cause • People can get help and information about alcohol and trying to stop. • Some people may feel comfortable talking to the speakers about their problems. • If they talk to people about their problems they can possibly slowly stop their addiction to alcohol

  7. How Can We Support • Help by having support groups for people to talk about their alcohol addictions • Rehab can help people by staying in a facility without any temptations and people to talk to whenever they need assistance. • Also family and friends can try to distract people without drinking. • Try to get a new hobby and get their mind off of drinking completely
