  1. AIM:What is an Ecosystem? Objectives • Describe the parts of an ecosystem using the vocabulary list

  2. AIM:What is an ecosystem? Vocabulary Community, Ecosystem, Population immigration & emigration

  3. Examine the next Six Slides What do they all have in common

  4. What did they have in common?

  5. How would you define the word “population” ? All of the same type of organism living in a certain place …A homogeneous group…

  6. What are two ways a population may increase in size? • More births than deaths • Immigration

  7. What are two ways a population may decrease in size? • More deaths than births • Emmigration

  8. How would an ecologist describe the picture on the left?

  9. Population Organism

  10. Look at the next two slides What is the difference between Picture A And Picture B

  11. Picture A

  12. Picture B

  13. What is the difference between Picture A And Picture B

  14. How would you define the word “Community” ? Which picture represents a community “A” or “B” Why

  15. DEFINITON: A community is made up of ALL the populations that live in a certain place. …a heterogeneous group…

  16. Example: In a forest, what might be some of the differing populations ?

  17. Which is larger: A community or a population?

  18. Important Note: A community is all the populations living in an area and not the area itself!

  19. Question: Do members of different populations in the same community interact with one another? How? List Example?

  20. Question: Are all of these interactions deliberate and intentional (ex: lion eats zebra) … or Are some of the interactions indirectly related without any deliberate interaction

  21. Example Where does a bee get food? Is that direct or indirect? Do you think the bee said: “gee, I got go over there and pollinate those flowers?” That’s an indirect relationship.

  22. DIRECT Predator-Prey Herbivores eating plants Bee gathering nectar INDIRECT The nitrogen of “poopy” which helps the soil Scavengers Bees pollinating flowers Interactions

  23. Analyze this next picture

  24. What do you see in this picture?

  25. Is everything living in this picture?

  26. Do the populations of this community interact?

  27. Do the populations of this community only interact with living things?

  28. Definition of Ecosystem All the living things and nonliving things, in an environment, combined together with their interactions defines an ecosystem

  29. Definition of Ecosystem An Ecosystem is a self supporting unit What does that mean?

  30. An Ecosystem must have four characteristics! 1.Source of energy (99% of the time it is the sun. (There are some exceptions!) 2.Transfer of energy. One population using another as food which transfers the energy.

  31. An Ecosystem must have four characteristics! 3.Breakdown of materials: Decomposition to raw materials and minerals 4. Materials and minerals are recycled to be used over and over again. (Including water!)

  32. immigration & emigration • Do population always live in the same place? • Sometimes they emigrate from their current home • Or, they immigrate to a new environment

  33. AIM: What are the needs of living things? Summary REVIEW VOCABULARY – AND THE AIM – AND THE OBJECTIVES

  34. Objectives • Describe the parts of an ecosystem using the vocabulary list Vocabulary Community, Ecosystem, Population

  35. AIM: What is an Ecosystem Class Activity: Worksheets Word Problems
