  4. Let’s Try One…..Solving the Puzzle Under the Sea Grades 3-5 • We have a mysterious looking document to share. • Does this map look like any map you have seen before? • What do you notice about the map? • What are you wondering about the map?

  5. Solving the Puzzle Under the Sea • We have a book that will answer many of these questions for us. Let’s read the book, “Solving the Puzzle Under the Sea”.

  6. Questions to Consider about the Book • How do you think Marie felt when her first boss told her that “Having a woman on a ship is bad luck?” • How do you think a map could be made of the ocean floor? • Why did she add colors to the map? • How did Marie and Bruce’s map support the new scientific theory of plate tectonics or continental drift? • What features do you see on the map?

  7. We are going to explore how Sonar Works! • Let’s watch this short video clip. • www.youtube.com/watch?v=bADFB199Klc After watching the video….How does sonar work?

  8. Sounding Boxes • Today you will work with a model to see how sonar helped Marie get a picture of the ocean floor. • Use your sonar stick (straw) to measure. Place centimeter marks on your stick. • The measurements taken by sonar are called “soundings” so these are “sounding boxes”. • Use your graph paper to graph the “soundings” found.

  9. Let’s Look at Page 16 of our book and compare • How does the profile compare with the one you have measured? • What can profiles tell us? • How is the activity that we did like the “soundings” that Marie’s team did? • How is it different?

  10. The Lesson Continues with How Are Mountains Made? • This lesson contains information about how mountains are formed as well. You would start with the reading of “How Mountains are Made”

  11. STEM At Home • All of the Picture Perfect STEM lessons contain an element that the students can do at home. These STEM activities can be done after the lesson is conducted in class to extend the students learning.
