  1. SEIU Local 1000 September 2010 Board Meeting Eric Douglas Leading Resources Inc. www.leadingresources.com

  2. Today’s Objectives: • Share my view of how we can improve the effectiveness of your Council. 2. Focus on the Council’s role in strategic planning. 3. Give you an assignment! www.leadingresources.com

  3. Overview: All Boards have to deal with the fact that members are asked to serve as both “governing Board” as well as the “arms and legs” of the organization. At L1000, we call this the “Board” hat and the “local” hat. Keeping these hats straight is difficult. 3 www.leadingresources.com

  4. Overview: 3. Much of what I observed in June had Council members wearing their local hats. 4. My goal is to find more ways for you to wear your Board hats this weekend. 4 www.leadingresources.com

  5. Overview: 5. I also observed in June that people had concerns about lines of communication between Council and staff, and DLCs and staff. 6. My goal is to help everyone be clear about who’s responsible for what. 5 www.leadingresources.com

  6. “Local Hat” • You are the “arms and legs” of the organization. • You handle many tasks and responsibilities. • You feel invigorated, challenged, and entrepreneurial. • Your meetings are typically action oriented. • There’s little time to work on the Board’s governance role. www.leadingresources.com

  7. “Local Hat” Positive behaviors • Your sense of commitment is high. • Your volunteer hours result in a very effective effort. • There’s a strong sense of personal reward and achievement. Negative behaviors • You lack attention to overall direction and performance. • You are confused about the Board’s role. • You are confused about lines of communication with staff. www.leadingresources.com

  8. “Board Hat” • Board defines a vision and strategic goals. • Board sets objectives and measures of success. • The Board focuses on monitoring performance. • Staff focuses on providing the Board good, objective performance updates. • This aligns the organization and increases its effectiveness. • Board isn’t confused about staff’s role. www.leadingresources.com

  9. “Board Hat” Positive behaviors • Board develops strong sense of governance focus and discipline. • Board communicates its goals via a strategic plan. • Board defines measures of success for organization. • Board focuses on monitoring results, which causes the organization to perform at increasingly higher levels. Negative behaviors • Some Board members may still try to direct staff. www.leadingresources.com

  10. Today’s Assignment: • Revisit your current strategic plan. • Appreciate the plan you’ve already approved! • The Board defined goals, objectives and measures of success a year ago. • We will be refreshing the plan in December. • Today, we need to focus on action! www.leadingresources.com

  11. Today’s Assignment: Each DLC: Decide the actions you still need to take for the objectives under Goal 4. If you have time, also define the actions for Objective 1.1. Focus on future actions, start dates, end dates, and who has lead responsibility. 11 www.leadingresources.com

  12. S.M.A.R.T. Actions Specific Measurable Actionable Realistic Time-Bound 12 www.leadingresources.com

  13. Today’s Assignment: Suggest what actions staff needs to take to support you in your DLC…. List the suggested action, start date, end date, and which dept. has lead responsibility. 13 www.leadingresources.com

  14. Today’s Assignment: 3. Be prepared to report out. To share an action step you think is particularly S.M.A.R.T! Share an action step you SUGGEST for staff that is important for your success. 14 www.leadingresources.com

  15. Today’s Assignment: 4. Make copies! We need to integrate these action plans. We’ll take your copy, make a copy, and give it back to you! Please label your master copy clearly with your DLC (plus contact person). Give it to the designated staff. Thank you! 15 www.leadingresources.com
