  3. Dermatology – describing a rash • How to describe a rash “This is Mr J Blogs, a 24 year old man who presented with a 2 week history of a ...” • Appropriate term e.g. macule, papule • Size • Colour • Temperature • Consistency • Site and distribution • Associated features e.g. itch, scale

  4. Terminology Macule Area of colour change <0.5cm. Surface is smooth.

  5. Terminology Patch Area of colour change > 0.5cm. Smooth surface.

  6. Terminology Plaque Palpable flat lesion > 0.5 cm, may be flat or elevated Psoriasis

  7. Terminology Papule Small palpable lesion < 0.5cm. BCC, molluscum contagiosum

  8. Terminology Nodule Palpable lesion > 0.5cm.

  9. Terminology Cyst Fluid filled papule or nodule, fluctuant.

  10. Terminology Vesicle Small fluid filled blisters < 0.5cm, may be single or multiple. Molluscum contagiosum, herpes zoster

  11. Terminology Bulla Larger fluid filled blister > 0.5cm. Bullous pemphigoid, pemphigus vulgaris

  12. Terminology Pustule Small, purulent vesicle, contain neutrophils but may or may not be infected. Acne vulgaris

  14. Terminology Wheal Oedematous papule or plaque caused by swelling in the dermis. Urticaria

  15. Terminology Fissure Break in epidermis caused by dryness.

  16. Terminology Erosion Superficial, shallow loss of skin surface. Squamous cell carcinoma
