  2. Was Ronald Reagan responsible for the end of Cold War?  Aims To analyse the views of Reagan towards the USSR

  3.  Your task • Read p.158-60 and note down what characterised Reagan’s approach to Cold War politics. • Extension. Can you see any similarities between Reagan’s approach and that of any previous US presidents. Explain your answer with examples.

  4. Features of Reagan’s policy • Aggressively anti-communist • Increase in military spending • New technologies, Stealth bombers, Trident, SDI • Reagan Doctrine – halt spread of Communism in Third World • Militarised counter-revolution • Covert operations • Propaganda – ‘Voice of America’ • Prepared to compromise on ethical issues, e.g. funding unpopular regimes • Closer ties with UK • Moral stance on Communism – ‘evil empire’

  6.  Homework • Read p.163-5 and list the factors that were weakening Soviet control over Europe. Which factor in your opinion was the most important? Write a brief judgement paragraph
