Discuss the story and talk about what you liked best about it. Then read the story as fast as you can for one minute, making as few mistakes as possible. Your teacher will stop you after ONE MINUTE. At the end, your teacher will let you count the words you read and will put a dot on the line or space showing how many words you read. Your teacher will put an X in the same column to show the number of mistakes you made. Practice reading it whenever you can. Then, read it for another ONE MINUTE with your teacher! Do this 7 times or until you read 64 words perfectly in one minute! Then, begin at a different place in the book for your next REPEATED READING. Each time, you will find that you are getting faster and more accurate as you read! That is called FLUENCY!

2. Time: Exactly 1 minute Mistakes: Anything that interrupts the flow or the reading, including repeating a word, substituting a synonym, “uh,” omission of word, addition of word, etc. Marking Speed: Put a dot on the line showing how many words were read. After the seventh reading, connect the dots. Marking Mistakes: Begin from the numbers on the right side and slide left to the column. Put an X on the line to show number of mistakes. After seven readings, connect the Xs. Begin again on a new passage.
