  1. Mini-Lesson #1 Readers Take Charge of Their Reading Lives

  2. Readers, I want to talk to you about this movie, Cast Away.

  3. One of the most memorable scenes in the movie is where Tom Hanks creates fire. Let’s watch it now…

  4. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vP2P8mhif-g

  5. I noticed how Tom Hanks does several things that are critical to the fire starting…. 1. He noticed that his first attempt wasn’t working and changed his method. 2. He didn’t give up even when he got hurt. 3. He had support from Wilson  & didn’t lose his sense of humor when things were tough. 4. He celebrates when he finally creates fire.

  6. This made me think about reading. Strong readers are aware when a strategy they are using isn’t working and change it. Strong readers don’t give up when their attempting a challenging or unfamiliar text. Strong readers have a support system in place and don’t take themselves so seriously when problems arise. Strong readers also celebrate victories.

  7. Think about a time when you were trying to get better at something or learn something new (a sport, video game, dance, new instrument…) and list a few key strategies that you used to help you….. • …now, turn and talk to your partner and write 3 key points on a sticky per pair.

  8. Readers, as we embark on this new reading adventure today, I want you to think of our journey as a fire; it takes some failed attempts and skills to get it lit and perseverance to keep it burning. I’m always here to be your Wilson.
