  1. The Five Second Sermon

  2. Second Covenant Jeremiah 31:31-34 “Behold, the days are coming, says the LORD, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah— 32 not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day that I took them by the hand to lead them out of the land of Egypt, My covenant which they broke, though I was a husband to them, says the LORD. 33 But this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says the LORD: I will put My law in their minds, and write it on their hearts; and I will be their God, and they shall be My people. 34 No more shall every man teach his neighbor, and every man his brother, saying, ‘Know the LORD,’ for they all shall know Me, from the least of them to the greatest of them, says the LORD. For I will forgive their iniquity, and their sin I will remember no more.” Hebrews 8:7-8 For if that first covenant had been faultless, then no place would have been sought for a second. 8 Because finding fault with them, He says: “Behold, the days are coming, says the LORD, when I will make a new covenant …

  3. Second Covenant First covenant was with Israel Genesis 17:7 And I will establish My covenant between Me and you and your descendants after you in their generations, for an everlasting covenant, to be God to you and your descendants after you. Exodus 2:24-25 So God heard their groaning, and God remembered His covenant with Abraham, with Isaac, and with Jacob. 25 And God looked upon the children of Israel, and God acknowledged them

  4. Second Covenant Acts 15:15-17 14 Simon has declared how God at the first visited the Gentiles to take out of them a people for His name. 15 And with this the words of the prophets agree, just as it is written:        16 ‘ Afterthis I will returnAnd will rebuild the tabernacle of David, which has fallen down;I will rebuild its ruins,And I will set it up;       17 So that the rest of mankind may seek the LORD,Even all the Gentiles who are called by My name,Says theLORD who does all these things.’

  5. Second Covenant • Established on better promises • Hebrews 8:6 But now He has obtained a more excellent ministry, inasmuch as He is also Mediator of a better covenant, which was established on better promises. • Has better sacrifices • Hebrews 9:23 Thereforeit was necessary that the copies of the things in the heavens should be purified with these, but the heavenly things themselves with better sacrifices than these.

  6. Second Covenant • Brings a better hope • Hebrews 7:19 for the law made nothing perfect; on the other hand, there is the bringing in of a better hope, through which we draw near to God. • Has a better mediator • Hebrews 8:1, 6 Now this is the main point of the things we are saying: We have such a High Priest, who is seated at the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in the heavens, …6 But now He has obtained a more excellent ministry, inasmuch as He is also Mediator of a better covenant

  7. Second Covenant Hebrews 10:10-12 By that will we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.11 And every priest stands ministering daily and offering repeatedly the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins. 12 But this Man, after He had offered one sacrifice for sins forever, sat down at the right hand of God,

  8. Second Commandment Matthew 22:29 And the second is like it: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself Romans 13:9-10 For the commandments, “You shall not commit adultery,” “You shall not murder,” “You shall not steal,”“You shall not bear false witness,” “You shall not covet,” and if there is any other commandment, are all summed up in this saying, namely, “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” 10 Love does no harm to a neighbor; therefore love is the fulfillment of the law.

  9. Second Commandment • The good Samaritan – Luke 10:25-37 • James 2:8-9 If you really fulfill the royal law according to the Scripture, “You shall love your neighbor as yourself,” you do well; 9 but if you show partiality, you commit sin, and are convicted by the law as transgressors.

  10. Second Man Adam was the first man. • 1 Corinthians 15:45 And so it is written, “The first man Adam became a living being.”[ He brought death. • 1 Corinthians 15:22 For as in Adam all die… • Romans 5:12 Therefore, just as through one man sin entered the world, and death through sin, and thus death spread to all men, because all sinned—

  11. Second Man Christ is the second man. • 1 Corinthians 15:47 The first man was of the earth, made of dust; the second Man is the Lord from heaven. He brings life. • 1 Corinthians 15:22 …even so in Christ all shall be made alive. • 1 John 5:11 And this is the testimony: that God has given us eternal life, and this life is in His Son.

  12. Second Coming Hebrews 9:28 so Christ was offered once to bear the sins of many. To those who eagerly wait for Him He will appear a second time, apart from sin, for salvation. John 14:1-3 “Let not your heart be troubled; you believe in God, believe also in Me. 2 In My Father’s house are many mansions; if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. 3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may be also.

  13. Second Coming He will come as He left. • Acts 1:9-11 Now when He had spoken these things, while they watched, He was taken up, and a cloud received Him out of their sight. 10 And while they looked steadfastly toward heaven as He went up, behold, two men stood by them in white apparel, 11 who also said, “Men of Galilee, why do you stand gazing up into heaven? This same Jesus, who was taken up from you into heaven, will so come in like manner as you saw Him go into heaven.” He will come unexpectedly. • Mark 13:32 “But of that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father.

  14. Second Coming He will reward the faithful. • Matthew 16:27 For the Son of Man will come in the glory of His Father with His angels, and then He will reward each according to his works • Matthew 25:34 Then the King will say to those on His right hand, ‘Come, you blessed of My Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world:

  15. Second Coming He will punish the unfaithful. • Matthew 25:41 “Then He will also say to those on the left hand, ‘Depart from Me, you cursed, into the everlasting fire prepared for the devil and his angels: • Matthew 7:23 And then I will declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness!’ 2 Thessalonians 1:7-9 and to give you who are troubled rest with us when the Lord Jesus is revealed from heaven with His mighty angels, 8 in flaming fire taking vengeance on those who do not know God, and on those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ. 9 These shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of His power,

  16. Second Death Romans 6:23 For the wages of sin is death,… Revelation 2:11 “He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. He who overcomes shall not be hurt by the second death.”’

  17. Second Death Revelation 20:14 Then Death and Hades were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death. Revelation 21:8 But the cowardly, unbelieving, abominable, murderers, sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars shall have their part in the lake which burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death.”
