4. Storage Space • Size • Your office may double as the equipment room (more common in ES) • Security of items • Who has keys? • Proximity to instructional area • Be creative to maximize space • Shelving, unused spaces

5. Guidelines for Facilities • There are guidelines and professional organizations for aspects of PE • NASPE trampoline guidelines • BB court • Surface Areas (inside & outside) • Restrooms & Water Fountains • Acoustics & Lighting • Sound deadening materials

6. Other Facility Considerations • Free of distractions & “pass-through traffic patterns” • Cannot lock doors designated for evacuation • Not general playground • May have to share with recess in elementary schools. Avoid if possible due to the distraction

Other Facility Considerations • Number of teaching stations • Should not exceed the number of classes scheduled in a period (outdoor fields DO NOT count as teaching stations in colder climates • How can you increase the number of teaching stations? • Some facilities can double as multiple teaching stations • Example: climbing wall in a pool or on an exterior wall • Conversely • DO NOT team teach or squeeze too many kids into a gym when other teaching stations are available (i.e. 9 v 9 volleyball)

8. Other Facility Considerations • Safety • Do not leave equipment lying around the side of the gym. Either store it or separate the area with mats • Consider safety door handles (not entirely accurate picture) • Never leave a gym unlocked b/c it is an attractive nuisance

10. Other Facility Considerations • Safety - Lines for general space • Never use the exterior wall as a border for an activity or any instruction. Use a line instead, typically the border of a basketball court • The general space ends approximately 2-3 feet from the wall

Maintenance of Indoor Facilities • Flooring • Consider floor covering if used for several purposes • Use gym tape, not masking tape • Refinish the floor periodically • Good opportunity to create shapes/lines for attendance, organization, instruction, etc • Do not allow gum in the gym • Clean standing water

12. Maintenance of Outdoor Facilities • Adventure • Must be inspected and recertified periodically (www.pa.org) • Fields – you are responsible for the condition of the field even if you did not inspect it prior to class • Items left on field, potholes

13. Additional Thoughts • Purchasing uniforms for PE • Student or department funded • Put “physical education” on the uniform • Do you want cold weather clothing? • Maintenance personnel . . . • NOT “janitors”
