  1. ICAP Strategic Information Methodological Webinar Using Maps to Visualize Our Work: An Overview of ICAP’s Mapping Resources Yingfeng Wu, ICAP NY Strategic Information UnitandKytt MacManus, the center for international Earth Science information network (CIESIN) at Columbia University

  2. ICAP’s Mapping Resources • Core map sets • Maps upon request • Interactive country mapper Definitions: GIS: Geographic Information System GPS: Global Positioning System

  3. Why maps? • We can use maps to • Tell the story of ICAP program expansion in reports and presentations • Highlight ICAP achievements for grant proposals • Inform program planning by identifying gaps in coverage • A picture is worth 1,000 words

  4. core mapsand maps upon request

  5. Background Methods Core map contents Examples of the maps and how they have been used Outline

  6. Background • The purpose of making the core maps is to give country teams a convenient way to visualize their programs for use in presentations or reports. • Collaboration with the Center for International Earth Science Information Network (CIESIN) at Columbia University.

  7. Methods Data: • GPS coordinates used to locate supported facilities • Routinely collected indicator data included • Regional HIV prevalence from the Demographic and Health Survey (DHS) used as the background layer Frequency: Generated quarterly since the fourth quarter of 2008

  8. Contents of core maps • A map of all ICAP-supported facilities in Sub-Saharan Africa • Within each country, 6 maps are routinely generated whenever data are available: 1) all supported facilities 2) supported facilities by activity 3) care and treatment clinics by current ART enrollment 4) HIV counseling and testing by VCT vs PICT 5) facilities supported for EID 6) facilities supported for Lab • New map: Countries where ICAP works at all levels (eg, facility, national)

  9. OTHER MAPS • Maps also generated upon special request to meet a variety of needs: • Reports (eg, MCAP renewal, MCAP close out reports) • Grant proposals (MCAP follow-on proposals: subnational/regional maps provided) • Presentations

  20. Research center at the Lamont Doherty Earth Observatory of Columbia University • Focus on work at the intersection of Social, Natural, and Information Sciences • Kytt MacManus (kmacmanu@ciesin.columbia.edu) • Geographic Information Specialist • Adjunct Lecturer of GIS at Columbia University SIPA • Focus on Global Data Creation, Modeling, and Application Development

  21. ICAP Country Mapper • Purpose • Flexible user friendly tool to produce maps which can be used • to describe and track ICAP programs • for donor and other stakeholder reports

  22. ICAP Country Mapper Highlights • Provides quarterly updates for more than 60 variables across 7 ICAP Program Areas • Provides additional contextual information from Demographic Health Surveys, ICAP PFaCTS, and other sources. • Provides an archive of data for past quarters (Q1 2009 – Present)
