  11. History of Mother’s Day • In 1907 Anna Jarvis started a campaign to honor mothers • In 1910 West Virginia became the first state to recognize it • In 1911 ALL states recognized Mother’s Day • In 1914, Woodrow Wilson declared it a national holiday • Then became more of a “commercial holiday”

  12. What Do Mother’s Want? • Just like God wants OUR HEARTS, I think mothers want OUR HEARTS as well. • Flowers are nice, cards are nice, but I think mothers deserve more than that • Especially godly mothers who have a HUGE impact

  13. What Do Mother’s Want? • My mother is the reason: • My dad is a Christian • My brother is a Christian • I am a Christian • Just like we can never repay God, we can never repay our mothers, but what does the Bible say they deserve?

  14. Obedience • “Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. “Honor your father and mother, which is the first commandment with promise: that it may be well with you and you may live long on the earth.” –Ephesians 6:1-3 • Of all the things God could have said, obedience is what He choose for “long life instruction”

  15. Wisdom • “…a foolish son is a grief to his mother.” – Proverbs 10:1 • Their job is hard enough, don’t make it harder • “Then He went down to Nazareth with them and was obedient to them. But his mother treasured all these things in her heart. And Jesus grew in wisdomand stature, and in favor with God and men.” – Luke 2:51-52

  16. Does this apply to you? • Those whose mothers have passed on • Those who do not have children • This message still applies to you • God intended the Church to be a family

  17. This applies to us ALL • “Do not rebuke an older man but encourage him as you would a father, younger men as brothers, older woman as mothers, younger women as sisters… - 1 Timothy 5:1-2 • We have our biological mothers, but also spiritual mothers

  18. Care • Honoring our mothers means providing for them when they can no longer provide for themselves. • “Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their time of distress…” –James 1:27 • For all the times they took care of us, let us now take care of them

  19. Obedient Wise Caring

  20. "My dear girl, the day you see I’m getting old, I ask you to please be patient, but most of all, try to understand what I’m going through. If when we talk, I repeat the same thing a thousand times, don’t... interrupt to say: “You said the same thing a minute ago”... Just listen, please. Try to remember the times when you were little and I would read the same story night after night until you would fall asleep. When I don’t want to take a bath, don’t be mad and don’t embarrass me. Remember when I had to run after you making excuses and trying to get you to take a shower when you were just a girl? "

When you see how ignorant I am when it comes to new technology, give me the time to learn and don’t look at me that way... remember, honey, I patiently taught you how to do many things like eating appropriately, getting dressed, combing your hair and dealing with life’s issues every day... the day you see I’m getting old, I ask you to please be patient, but most of all, try to understand what I’m going through. If I occasionally lose track of what we’re talking about, give me the time to remember, and if I can’t, don’t be nervous, impatient or arrogant. Just know in your heart that the most important thing for me is to be with you.

  22. And when my old, tired legs don’t let me move as quickly as before, give me your hand the same way that I offered mine to you when you first walked. When those days come, don’t feel sad... just be with me, and understand me while I get to the end of my life with love. I’ll cherish and thank you for the gift of time and joy we shared. With a big smile and the huge love I’ve always had for you, I just want to say, I love you... my darling daughter. "
