  2. 1. « Metro, boulot, dodo » - subway, work, sleep – this is how Parisians describe their daily routine.

  3. 2. Secondary education: • begins at 11 years old • students attend le college or C.E.S. • students are in years sixième(6th), cinqième (5th), quatrième (4th), and troisième (3rd) • These correspond to grades 6, 7, 8, and 9 in the U.S. (French grade levels count down, notup.)

  4. All French students use similar textbooks, follow similar schedules and take the same major tests. • All classes do not meet every day • Students must take a second language.

  5. At the end oftroisième (3rd – this corresponds to 9th grade) students take their firstbrevet des collèges exam. • After four years in le college (middle school) students may choose to go to vocational school. • Academically inclined students attend le lycée (high school).

  6. Students go to le lycée in seconde (2nd), première (1st) and terminale. (These correspond to grades 10, 11, and 12 in the U.S.) • In le lycée they choose a major of study in preparation for le baccalauréat (le bac).

  7. 11. Le baccalauréatis the national exam that determines whether or not students may continue their education at a university.

  8. 12. Première (11th grade) – first part of le bac – mostly on French language 13. Terminale(12th grade) – second part of le bac – students’ areas of concentration.

  9. 14. French lycée classroom – sparsely decorated. 15. Students sit at tables instead of desks 16. Formal teacher-student relationship in France.

  10. 17. Grades – point system with 20 being the top score. 18. Overall average of 10 out of 20 is needed to pass onto the next grade 19. Over half of students in le lycée repeat at least one year of school.

  11. 20. Lunch is in la cantine or la cafeteria. 21. Un goûter – afternoon snack 22. Co-curricular activities usually take place away from school.
