Japanese Aggression and Genocide • Timeline: • 1931-Japan invades Manchuria • July 7, 1937 Marco-Polo Bridge incident-begins 8 year undeclared war on China • Late 1937-early 1938, Nanking Massacre, also called Rape of Nanking • 1940-Japan has over 1.5 million troops in China and now controls the eastern part of China.

Nanking Massacre-"Rape of Nanking" • Estimates of 100,000-300,000 Chinese troops, women and children dead in just 8 weeks. • Over 20,000 rape’s reported “Japanese soldiers raped thousands of girls and women, many of whom were dragged from their homes. By the end of December, 20,000 cases of rape had been reported. One girl was raped 37 times. Another had her four-month-old son smothered by the soldier who raped her.” • Mass executions- lined up Chinese civilians and soldiers, gun them down with machine guns.
