  1. 28/05/15 Numeracy Workshop for Parents

  2. Aims: • To share recent developments in how we teach Numeracy at Inshes Primary. • To experience some of the activities the children do to develop their Numeracy skills. • To explore some of the new resources being used in classes to teach Numeracy. • To have an opportunity to ask questions.

  3. Numeracy in the past… • Written methods (one way) • Pages of sums • Confused children with process • Lack of number sense • Persistent errors… see me! • Dislike of the subject • Reliant on written strategies as adults • Use of calculators - debate

  4. …YES!!!

  5. Raising Attainment in Numeracy • Understanding progression • Mental agility • Links between 4 operations (+ - x ÷) • Numeracy across learning • Parental involvement

  6. Numeracy now… • Mental calculation skills are vital! • Visualisation of number • Mental strategies • Many methods • Estimation skills – number sense • e.g. If I have 18 sweeties in one bag and 33 • in another, how many do I have • altogether?

  7. Numeracy now continued… • Numeracy set within a real-life context • Knowing facts AND • Able to calculate word problems • Links made across the curriculum – application of skills • Problem solving • Interdisciplinary links • Links between mathematical concepts • Outdoor learning

  8. Numeracy now continued… • Explanation of chosen method • Pupil engagement and enthusiasm • Written calculations – when?

  9. Here’s why… Learners' Videos

  10. Mental Agility is…

  11. Practical Examples of • Mental Agility • 18x5= • Set within a real-life context: • There are 18 weeks left of the school year, how many school days will that be?

  12. How do your methods compare? • Did anyone use a different method?

  13. Did anyone naturally estimate the answer before calculating? • Now have a go at some of these: • 1. 7 + 6 + 3 + 10 + 3 = • 2. 25 + 26 = • 3. 36 + 72 + 18 = • 4. 89 + 35 = • 5. 795 + 68 = • …discuss your method with the person sitting beside you. 

  14. Developing Number Sense…

  15. Developing Number Sense… • Is a mental method appropriate?

  16. Developing Number sense… How do we do this? • Parents/carers at home • At the Early Level • (In Nursery and Primary 1)

  17. A Natural Progression – First Level:

  18. First/Second Level:

  19. Other mental strategies: • Strategy vs. • Process

  20. First Level – Key Concepts/ Skills: • (Primary 2 – Primary 4) • Zero as a placeholder in whole numbers • Place value – Th H T O (ones) • Rounding whole numbers • Accuracy of calculations • Compare estimate to solution • Relative size of fractions • Relationships between operations + - x ÷ • Simple number sequences and rules • Importance of number systems

  21. First Level – Key Concepts/ Skills: • Measurement (including time): • Instruments • Standard units – mm, cm, m, km, g, kg, l, ml • Reading scales • Accuracy • Shape, Position and Movement: • Features of 2D shapes and 3D objects • Concepts of angles • Grids • Symmetrical patterns and shapes

  22. First Level – Key Concepts/ Skills: • Data Handling: • Interpreting data • Graphical representations • Likelihood of an event

  23. Second Level – Key Concepts/ Skills: • (Primary 5 – Primary 7) • Zero as a placeholder in decimal fractions • Rounding decimals • Negative numbers • Relationship between fractions, decimals and percentages • Multiples and factors of numbers • Order of operations • Complex number sequences • Impact of maths in global environment

  24. Second Level – Key Concepts/ Skills: • Measurement (including time): • Conservation of measurement • Calculation of measurement • Convert standard units – e.g. mm to cm • Area, perimeter and volume • Shape, Position and Movement: • Properties of and relationships between 2D shapes and 3D objects • Symmetry in 2D shapes • Nets • Bearings • Coordinates

  25. Second Level – Key Concepts/ Skills: • Data Handling: • Appropriate collection of data • Choice of appropriate graphical representations • Reliability of data and graphs • Probability • ASG Milestones – end of Second Level

  26. How you can help at home… • Be positive and numeracy and your own skills! • Practise basic skills • Ask questions • Play games • Shopping • Telling the time • Cooking • Shapes

  27. Resources you can use at home: • Make numeracy fun! • Magnetic numbers • Dominoes • Board games • Playing cards • Apps & games on the computer • Clocks • Money
