  1. Your Place in the Knowledge Economy Preparing to Empower Others for the Knowledge Economy ‘Gbenga Sesan me@gbengasesan.com | www.gbengasesan.com KnowledgeHouse Africa Retreat. Ibassa Island, Lagos, NIGERIA. July 3 2004

  2. What Exactly is the Knowledge Economy? “He who receives an idea from me receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine receives light without darkening me.” - Thomas Jefferson • Technology and knowledge are now the key factors of production. What of Land, labour, capital and entrepreneurship? • Enhancing human capital is critical for GDP growth. GDP is a measure of the economy adopted in the United States in 1991; the total market values of goods and services by produced by workers and capital within the borders of a nation during a given period – usually 1 year • Globalization, Information/KnowledgeIntensity, and Networking/Connectivity are the driving forces of the Knowledge Economy • Know-why and know-who matters more than know-what • Life long learning is vital for organisations and individuals • ICT releases people's creative potential and knowledge • Knowledge gained by experience is as important as formal education and training For further enquiries, please contact www.enterweb.org/know.htm, topics.developmentgateway.org/knowledge, www.skyrme.com/insights/21gke.htm, and www.med.govt.nz/pbt/infotech/knowledge_economy/knowledge_economy-04.html

  3. Physician, Heal Thyself • You can only give what you have. Empowering others would mean you’re already empowered yourself… • KnowledgeHouseAfrica’s increased influence will bring increasing demands within an increasingly complex economy • Meeting the need of others would require additional efforts – twice the work others will do • The Knowledge Economy comes with a self-serving pool of resources, accessible through the opportunities that the Internet provides

  4. Practical Steps • What is your IP address, or URL? Playing a key role in the KE demands web presence – e.g. a website or a blog spot (www.blogger.com, www.20six.co.uk) • Connect with ongoing national/regional/global efforts hat rhyme with your mission. For example, AISI Youth list, eNigeria Yahoo Group + NigeriaTomorrow, ICT4D News and the WSIS Process • Be a proactive and creative pioneer. Some say “why?” and I choose to ask, “why not?” • Add energy to group efforts, and whatever you do, always make time for IMPACT!
