  1. Q1: In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products? • Our title sequence conforms to the physiological thriller genre • Our title sequence may challenge the conventions of a normal physiological thriller because of the way we have used characters and images. • A film that inspired me was Donnie Darko and has similar conventions to our film. In Donnie Darko he is seeing things that are unreal and is being compelled to do stuff and in our title sequence and what we would imagine our film to become our character goes through a similar thing. • With the film Donnie Darko I liked the idea that it was set in a normal suburb around normal people and the main character is seemingly normal.

  2. Q2. How does your media product represent particular social groups? • There are only two characters in our title sequence, a couple. A boy and a girl. They are fairly young and are middle class. This is quite typical of a physiological thriller. • If think they are quite typical of the genre and the victim role within the genre. • The way our main character is represented is a almost helpless victim because of what is going on around him and he is also portrayed as mental disturbed with reference to the scribbling all over the paper with the paint. • The way we have used props, costumes and setting gives the audience a very good sense of how our character is. It shows them that he is very secluded and lonely. Props such as the matches help give an atmosphere when he was alone in the dark. Also his costume let us know he is very simple and may be very low on money. The girl as in a off white-ish dress which we chose to show her innocence but it is not very visible in the title sequence seeing as it was very dark • Our main character is somewhat similar to the character Donnie Darko in the fact that he is a normal person and yet he starts seeing and hearing very bizarre thing.

  3. Q3. What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why? • With our film I feel it would be an independent film and looking at similar film and especially Donnie Darko it would be released by an independent film company that was tied to the film from the beginning. For example Donnie Darko was released on Drew Barrymore's production company, Flower Films. • I feel our film would profit from being a art house film and then to DVD. Marketing and word of mouth would make it very successful. Donnie Darko as shown on only 58 screens nationwide, the film grossed $110,494 in its opening weekend, it made $4.1 million worldwide. • I think that our film would be shown at a cinema like the Duke of York’s • I think the institution would distribute our film to our target audience by using the internet and social networking website, creating a lot of hype and creating a lot of things to go with the film and putting them on the internet.

  4. Q4: Who would be the audience for your media product? Someone who is into intrigue and mystery with a twist. Someone who likes to try and figure things out for themselves but at times never quite gets there. Someone who never gives up trying and will always give it a go at working out what in happening, nonetheless still loves the aspect of surprise. Thrillers are usually popular with the younger generations like the under 25’s. Thrillers and psychological thrillers are somewhat similar to action films in some aspects but their narratives are just more complex which is why I feel the reason why the audience is prominently males. I feel females are drawn to this genre because of the complex narrative and characters. Because some thrillers do have complex narratives I think it does slightly limit their potential audience, for example the youngest audiences would not be able to follow the narrative and the oldest audiences may also have trouble following. I feel that our film wouldn’t appeal to a specific gender because it would draw in the male audience with the suspense and mystery within the film and the female audiences would be drawn in by the love story that runs within the film I think a film that is similar to ours with the fact that he is being haunted by a past love and is having to fight his demons would be Inception. The film focuses on Leonardo DiCaprio as Dom Cobb, who is being haunted by Marion Cotillard as Mallorie "Mal" Cobb. He is unable to get away from her and the guilt of her suicide which he feels was his fault for allowing her to become consumed with the idea that their world was not real.

  5. Q5. How did you attract your audience? As I feel the target audience is the younger demographic I feel that the best promotion decisions would be to use the internet and make use of social networking sites and create and viral campaign, maybe using The Blair Witch Project as inspiration. Seeing as I feel our film would be independent it would start off showing in small independent cinemas and would eventually go onto DVD. As with Donnie Darko it did not do well in cinemas but once on general release the film has become a cut hit. I think something like they did with The Dark Knight here they did a treasure hunt finally get tickets for the premier of the film would benefit our film promotion hugely. Also merchandise would play a key role and now with technological advances we could create an app like they have for Inception where you are part of the dream world

  6. Q6. What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing your product? I have learnt that planning is key to creating any sort of artifact and keeping thing structured. Research is another valuable resource to helping plan our opening sequence. The preliminary exercise was a great help in showing us how to create a well cut flowing sequence. Also when editing the preliminary exercise it allowed us to become familiar with the editing software and be able to become confident using it on our own. Evidencing our work was a great help because it meant we could go back and re visit previous ideas and create a better final product. Things like storyboards and taking photographs from the recce were invaluable to help us move on with our title sequence.

  7. Q7. Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel that you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product? The preliminary exercise was very important to help us progress as a group. I was lucky that I was still working with the same people I did the preliminary exercise with to create our title sequence. This was a great benefit because it allowed us to keep the bond we had created and the feeling that we were working well together as a team. As I have already said it helped us develop our understanding the technical aspects of creating a sequence and what it needs to be successful. The preliminary exercise also taught us how to select the right music to set the scene and pace of the sequence.
