  3. PROCEDURES STEP 1: • SURVEY: • If you were there… • TITLES • HEADINGS • PICTURES • PHOTOGRAPHS • MAPS • DESCRIPTIONS • CAPTIONS • ITALICIZED WORDS • BOLD WORDS

  4. SURVEY EXAMPLE • On page 182: The lesson is introduced using an “If you were there” passage. The question from “If you were there” is: Why is this legend important to your family? • The major heading on page 182 is : • China’s Physical Geography • The subheadings are: • A vast and varied land • The rivers of China , p. 183 • There is also a Building Background paragraph on this page.

  5. Survey Example, p. 183 • At the top of page 183, there is a physical map of China. The map includes an interpreting maps question: What rivers can you see on this map? • At the bottom of page 183, there is reading check question that asks: What geographical features limited travel in China?

  6. PROCEDURES STEP 2 : QuestionTurn the HEADINGS into QUESTIONS • 1. What is important about studying the physical geography of China? • 2. What makes China a vast and varied land? • 3. What are the rivers of China? • *Also include reading check questions, questions about vocabulary, and other text questions in your notes.

  7. PROCEDURES STEP 3: PREDICT • I predict I will learn: • After responding to the If you were there… question, surveying the text, and developing questions you should be prepared to make an educated prediction about what important information you will learn.

  8. PROCEDURES STEP 4: READ • Look for answers to your questions as you read.

  9. STEP 5 of Procedures: Respond • Answer your questions --the ones you formed from the headings and the ones found within the text.

  10. PROCEDURES Step 6: Summarize • Retell the main parts of what you read in your own words. • How do you write a summary? • Literature Textbook, p. 699.

How to Write a Summary • Reasons/main idea: • To learn about how the Chinese civilization began with the Shang dynasty along the Huang He. • Explanations: • China’s physical geography made farming possible but travel and communication difficult. • Examples: • Civilizations began in China along the Huang He and Chang Jiang rivers. • WRAP UP: We should learn about the geographic features of China that isolated China from the rest of the world so we can understand how governing and the spreading of ideas were difficult. HSS 6.6.2.
