  2. The Byzantine Empire The Big Idea The Roman Empire split into two parts, and the Eastern Roman Empire prospered for hundreds of years after the western empire fell. 7.1.3

  3. The Eastern Empire • Main Idea 1: • Eastern emperors ruled from Constantinople and tried but failed to reunite the whole Roman Empire.

  4. The Eastern Empire • Emperor Justinian wanted to reunite the old Roman Empire. He re-conquered Italy & more land around the Mediterranean. Justinian

  5. The Eastern Empire • Justinian also examined Rome’s laws and organized them into a legal system called the Justinianic Code. • Removed out-of-date and unchristian laws • Simplified Roman law to give fair treatment to all Justinian Justinian and his advisers

  8. The Eastern Empire • A long time later in 1453, a group called the Ottoman Turks captured Constantinople and ended the eastern Roman Empire. • The 1,000-year history of the eastern Roman Empire came to an end.

Christianity in Eastern Rome • Christianity was very important to both the Eastern and the Western part of Rome. • Churches & mosaics reflected their devotion to God. • Mosaics are pictures made with pieces of colored stone or glass. You can find this mosaic of Jesus at the Hagia Sophia in Byzantium (which is called Istanbul Today)

Christianity in Eastern Rome • People in the East and West also began to interpret elements of Christianity differently. • Eastern priests could get married, but Western priests could not. • Church services were performed in Greek in the East and in Latin in the West.
