  3. Background • 2001 South Apopka designated a Safe Neighborhood • Created a citizen group to oversee crime prevention and safety initiatives • Although crime has decreased, there remains significant challenges

  4. Background • Total Occupied Units – 1,907 • 65% Homeownership rate • Last 90 Days Crime Statistics • 161 property and robbery crimes total • 41 Auto Burglaries and Stolen Vehicles • 58 Residential Burglaries • Deputies report continued drug sales, loitering and gang activity

  5. Background • Dec 2010 OCSO and NPRD conduct a neighborhood survey to identify vulnerable areas • Feb 2011 NPRD met with Comptrollers Office to determine if an MSBU amendment is possible

  6. Background • Sept 2011- A lighting study is conducted Aug 2012 to identify the specific locations for the new lights • Oct 2012 Community meeting and preliminary cost estimates presented • Dec 2012 Ballots returned

  7. Project Costs • 133 new 100W lights • 82 on existing poles • 51 on new wood poles • Installation of new street lights $15,400 • Cost covered by Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance (JAG) Program • Current MSBU $30.88 • Proposed MSBU $41.00

  8. MSBU Ballot Results • 1,383 ballots mailed • 150 yes – 50.2% in favor • 149 no – 49.8% not in favor • 77 – returned as undeliverable by the post office • 3 – returned after the deadline • 1,004 – no reply

  9. Holden Heights MSBU • March 28, 2000 BCC Agenda • Hartage requested public hearing without balloting • Coordinated with OBT Safe Neighborhood • Crime and high number of renters

  10. Requested Action • Board direction regarding scheduling a public hearing on the South Apopka Street Lighting MSBU
