  1. Achievements in Result area #2:Development of Operational services Farai Marumbwa • AMESD SADC Policy Workshop, 3-4 June 2013, Gaborone, Botswana

  2. Outline • Context: -AMESD Key result areas • Status of service development 1.Agriculture 2. Drought 3. Fire 4. LFR • Delivery of services and products • Additional Software • User support

  3. INTRODUCTION- AMESD KEY RESULT AREAS • Result 1 : Improved access by African users to existing basic Earth Observation, field and ancillary data • Result 2 : Operational information services are established to improve decision-making processes in the fields of environmental management and other policies • Result 3 : Political and policy development frameworks are strengthened to ensure active and sustainable participation of African governments in global environmental surveillance. • Result 4 : An adequate technical level of AMESD African stakeholders is permanently ensured • AMESD SADC Final Workshop June 3-4 Gaborone, Botswana

  4. AMESD SADC THEMA: Services • Regional Economic Community (REC) SADC Secretariat • Regional Implementation Centre (RIC) (RIC) Botswana Department of Meteorological Services (BDMS) • Based on user needs requirement:-stakeholder Workshop that was held on 2nd – 4th February 2009. • Based on existing capacity- not developed from scratch. • Dedicated system for each service eg E-station for agriculture service

  5. 1) Agriculture Service Expected result:Development of 39 Production chains for Agriculture (BDMS) Service: Allows MoA to perform crop condition monitoring and yield Outlooks The service is building on the SADC FANR crop monitoring activities Agromet Up-dates Principle: Improve and expand the former REWS systems from SADC-RRSU. • Automation and dissemination via EUMETcast- using the E-station

  6. 1) Agriculture Service- service development process Receiving Station Processing Station visualisation Station Receiving PC 1 eStation The service is developed by BDMS- Technical assistance from FANR, FEWsnet and JRC.

  7. Agricultural Service: Status of service development Status of service development: • Automated production chains (95%) complete • The 5% is explained by unavailability of input data from member states (Crop statistics) Example of products First issue Nov 2011

  8. 2) Drought Service- Overview Based upon Drought Monitoring System of ARC & BDMS. The drought service relies on the PUMA and AMESD drought monitoring software Target: Development of 17 production chains Delivers “Drought maps” and a “Drought Outlook” in support of both agriculture and environmental issues Key-Users • National Level : • Ministries of Agriculture • Ministries of Environment • Regional Level : SADC FANR

  9. Drought service data production process • Drought products are generated using the AMESD Drought Software. • A total of 17) products that are generated by the AMESD Drought Software. • All of these products are currently being routinely distributed via EUMETCast. Operationally disseminating products since July 2011

  10. Drought Service Products: Status of service development • Status of development • 17 out of 17 (100%) production chains for Drought products complete. • The Drought monitoring software 1st version released • Users trained on the use of the drought software Drought Risk Map • Examples of products Rainfall graphs Regional Drought bulletin

  11. 3. FIRE SERVICE:Overview • Based on the AFIS developed by CSIR • The AMESD Fire service allows MoE • To assess the fire risk • To detect new bushfires & to monitor the movement of existing fires • To assess the damage of fires (burnt areas). Expected result: 5 production chains and software for Fire monitoring • Ideal for users that need near real time fire information in remote areas where Internet access is limited or unavailable

  12. Fire Service : Status of service development • Examples of products • Satellite • Time of Detection • Fire Intensity • Landcover • Fire Danger • Date since last burn Production automation 100% Complete AMESD fire station (v2) released Active fire detection Fire Danger Index Burnt area per country

  13. Long Range Forecast (LRF) : Overview • Developed By South African Weather Services (SAWS) • The LRF- support service to the agriculture, drought and fire service. • Integration the LRF in the three services enables users embed a “Seasonal Outlook” in the three services. Expected result: Development of 3 processing chains for LRF • The LRF support service deliver the following forecasts: 1) “Rainfall” X 3, 2)“Minimum Temperature X 3” and 3)“Maximum Temperature X 3”.

  14. Long Range Forecast: status of service development Example of rainfall LRF • Achievements: • Automated production chains (100%) 3 monthly forecast Updated every month

  15. Delivery of Products and services: • The SADC-THEMA products are delivered through: • EUMETCast – Primary dissemination channel Automated Scripts in place for dissemination 2) FTP site and website (www.amesd.co.bw/products) • Users who completely missed the reception of some data, can retrieve the data via FTP via and website. • The FTP solution is a backup for EUMETCast- the secondary means of distribution. 3) Bulletins All services - monthly

  16. Product quality control measures Quality Assurance • Software: • Systematic tests before new software is released. • Production • Quality Control (manual) on Output Products • Dissemination • Checksum after FTP's • Dissemination log file • Products • Validation • Backup • For data and software • Data stored on 2 physically separated locations. Dissemination log file

  17. SUMMARY: SERVICE DEVELOPMENT & DISSEMINATION

  18. ADDITIONAL Tools for the services: AMESD-SADC TOOL BOX • AMESD SADC toolbox is Plug-in in Ilwis Open • Menu based on XML configuration file • Can be easily modified according to preferences of user • New functionality can be added without need for programming • Useful in training, research as well as in professional routine practice ! Msg fires Onset of rains Onset of rains Cummulative Dmp http://52north.org/communities/earth-observation/amesd-sadc-toolbox-software

  19. USER SUPPORT AND FEEDBACK: Discussion Forum • The AMESD SADC-THEMA helpdesk (forum, email ) is the primary contact point for support to users. • Three categories of discussion forums (Receiving station , Products and service and AMESD SADC THEMA IWLWIS Toolbox forums) exist under • Contact: SADC-THEMA Help Desk • E-mail: info@amesd.bw • www.amesdsadc.org • Telephone: +267 361 2243
