  5. All Separatists are Pilgrims • William Bradford was a leader of a group of Separatists. • He decided to leave England and start a colony where they could worship as they pleased. • Bradford asked the Virginia Company for permission to begin a new settlement in Virginia.

  9. Squanto? Who is Squanto? Squanto was a Native American that had been captured by European slave traders and sold into slavery in Spain. Later freed, he went to England where he learned to speak English. An Englishman, who had become his Friend, helped Squanto reunite with his tribe in America. In return for this kindness, Squanto did what he could to help the Pilgrims survive in their new land.

The First Thanksgiving • Squanto taught the Pilgrims how to fish, hunt, and farm. • For their good luck, the Pilgrims decided to have a feast of thanksgiving. • The Pilgrims invited the Wampanoag tribe and they feasted on cornbread, duck, lobster, deer, fish, pumpkin, squash, berries, and wild plums. (What is missing?) • The feast lasted three days and included parades, games, and races.

The Puritans Arrive • The Puritans were a religious group from England who wanted to “purify” or change the Church of England. • These were very unpopular beliefs and because of this many Puritans were put into jail. • John Winthrop was a leader in the Puritan community and he believed that the group should build their own colony in New England.

The Puritans Arrive • John Winthrop told his followers that they could build a “city upon a hill with all the eyes of the people will be watching us.” • The Puritans learned valuable lessons from the early settlers. • In 1630, Winthrop sailed for New England with about 1,000 colonists and 15 ships loaded with food, tools, horses, and cows. Thanks to good planning, the Puritans did not have to face a time of starvation.

  15. The Puritans Arrive • The Puritans called their colony the Massachusetts Bay Colony. • They chose a peninsula in Massachusetts Bay for their settlement. They named this place Boston. • Boston grew rapidly thriving on fishing, fur trading, and shipbuilding. • Why did they choose jobs like these to earn money?
