  1. 1863 HMS ORPHEUS By Sonja andTori

  2. When did it sink? The HMS Orpheus sunk on the 7th February 1863 at 1:30pm. The HMS Orpheus was 5 years old, it was made in 1858.

  3. Who was the HMS Orpheus? The HMS Orpheus was named after a Greek god. The HMS Orpheus was a British war ship heading to New Zealand from Sydney in 1863. It’s mission was to help the withdraw of two other battle ships who had been fighting in the New Zealand wars in Waikato warland. ( A war ship is a boat intended for battle).

  4. Where the shipwreck happened This long arrow shows the harbour where that the captain was supposed to have gone! Can anyone see the problem? (The red cross shows where the HMS Orpheus sunk) The HMS Orpheus was supposed to meet these two ships in the WaitemataHarbour on the East side of New Zealand, but the captain didn’t want to have to go around Cape Reinga, so he decided to try a shortcut through the ManukauHarbour on the west side.

  5. What happened before the wreck? The tide was right and the conditions were fine and sunny. When the HMS Orpheus arrived at the Waikato harbour entrance another ship was coming out… the Wonga Wonga. The signalman on the day, Edward Wing, told the HMS Orpheus to take the bar route across the harbour mouth. But the captain was using the wrong map.

  6. What happened next? The captain ordered his first mate to take a different channel! Asthe ship entered the wrong channel it got stuck on the sandbar! After a few hours the rough seas caused the ship to snap in half. Then it sunk to the bottom of the sea. According to Wikipedia the HMS Orpheus was the worst maritime tragedy to occur in New Zealand waters .

  7. Who was there and who died? There were 259 navel officers including the captain on board when the Orpheus sunk. 189 died, including the captain. Most of the sailors that died were age between 12 or 18. Several men were either crushed by falling masts or drowned in the wreck. Here are some photos of some graves of the people that died on the HMS Orpheus. Others were buried in the sand dunes by the harbour entrance. R.I.P
