  2. From the beginning…….. • Palmer Lake owes its beginnings to General William J. Palmer and the Rio Grande Railroad • Developed as a “health resort and vacation community” because of its mountain location and easy accessibility by railroad • Dr. William Finley Thompson, a dentist in Denver, saw its resort possibilities and developed the town in 1882

  3. The Gift • Dr. Thompson gave the gift of the first schoolhouse to the community in 1888 • Miss Clarabelle Palmer, daughter of C.W. Palmer was the first teacher who taught grades 1-8 • The bell now in the belfry at the Little Log Church was originally in the belfry at the schoolhouse

  4. TIMELINE • 1919- Lewis Consolidated School District was formed from several small districts around Monument • 1920- “Big Red” built for grades 1-12 • 1925- Little Log Church founded • 1928- Electricity comes to Palmer Lake • 1934-$10,000 brick schoolhouse built at 115 Upper Glenway for grades 1-8

  5. 1948-Palmer Lake District #33 joins with Lewis Consolidated #5 of Monument to form Lewis-Palmer District #38.Grades 1-3 in Palmer Lake, 1-12 in Monument • 1980- Palmer Lake closes • 1985-86 Extensive remodeling done to Palmer Lake. Metal building located between the two buildings moved to bus barn in Monument

  6. 1986-Large brick addition joins the two existing structures. • Addition includes: lobby and 6 classrooms upstairs, library, gym, stage, mini-theater, and 2 classrooms downstairs • 1992- Cafeteria/Multipurpose Room added to Palmer Lake • 1993- Playground of Dreams built

  7. 2004- Playground was remodeled through a grant that included several stages of implementation • 2004-Conference Room was built

  8. Who we are today… A Community School that offers: • 4th of July Run • Santa’s Breakfast • Senior’s Thanksgiving Luncheon-28th year • Dances • PALS program- Patrons Assisting Learning • MTSS • Walk Your Child to School Day • Wee Deliver Post Office

  9. Student Enrollment- 355 • Grades-preschool through 6th grade • Programs- ECAW, ECAR, STEM Engineering Classes, Robotics, Dance Classes, CAT’S Meow Choir, High Trails Outdoor Ed., Band, and Green Panther Club

  10. Most Proud of…. • Overall Rating of MEETS for Student Achievement, Academic Growth, and Academic Growth Gaps with the exception of Academic Growth Gaps in Writing-EXCEEDS • Diversity • Community • 125 years of doing the right thing
