  1. Why Earth Science? Nearly everything we do is connected to the Earth: its land, soil, rocks, minerals, atmosphere, oceans, plants and animals.

  2. Why Earth Science? Discovery How did the dinosaur footprints get there ?

  3. Why Earth Science? To understand and appreciate our complex planet. To maintain wise stewardship of Earth’s resources. To sustain and improve the quality of life.

  4. Why Earth Science? ENVIRONMENTAL STEWARDSHIP Muds provide mechanisms for natural remediation of pollutants.

  5. Why Earth Science? Everyone benefits from wise management of natural resources Minimize destruction by natural hazards; hurricanes, earthquakes, volcanic eruptions and floods.

  6. Why Earth Science? ENGINEERING Restoration of eroded beach at Grand Isle.

  7. Why Earth Science? Empowers us to think globally and act locally. Basic input to debates about issues affecting our lives - clean water, urban planning, global climate change, production of non-renewable resources.

  8. Why Earth Science? Travel Attend lectures where there are rocks.

  9. Why Earth Science? Answers many questions; Why are earthquakes more common in California than in Louisiana? Why are beaches so prone to erosion? How will we get gasoline and oil for our cars?

  10. Why Earth Science? Ecology/Environme nt. Use the modern to study past climate change.

  11. Why Earth Science? Improves our ability to predict future events. Offers many challenges in preparing our environment to sustain 8,000,000,000 people by 2025.

  12. Why Earth Science? Astrophysics and Biology Asteroid impacts have influenced the evolution of life. When is the next?

  13. Why Earth Science? It’s fun and personally rewarding!!!

  14. Why Earth Science? Starting salaries are excellent. B.S … ~$30,000. M.S. … $60,000 plus.

  15. Why Earth Science? Travel “Badlands” of SD by field trip caravan.

  16. Why Earth Science? Something in geology and geophysics for everyone ! Study areas appeal to persons with interests in biology, chemistry, physics, environmental science, mathematics, engineering, computer science, history, or political science. Earth science educators in demand.

  17. Why Earth Science? APPLIED PHYSICS Sound waves reveal features below the ground.

  18. Why Earth Science? History Read 1,000,000 000 years of Earth history in the Grand Canyon.

  19. Why Earth Science? Special Opportunities Summer intro- course in the Rockies for pre- Freshmen.

  20. Why Earth Science? Special Opportunities Summer Course for geoscience majors.
