Why Gateway? • Responds to feedback from alumni and employers: • Need for better communication skills • Ability to work in teams • Think critically and strategically • Responds to university priority of increasing graduation rates by: • Ensuring a common set of skills and knowledge for all (CSUN and transfer) students • Prepare students for upper division work:

Gateway Course Objectives • Develop Student Process Skills • Building effective teams • Enhancing written and oral communication • Time management • Review and integrate Lower Division Core (LDC) • Introduce Strategic Thinking • Make decisions using an ethical approach • Understand Interdisciplinary Nature of Business Problems • Create personal networks and COBAE community

How Will Gateway be Delivered? • Active Student Learning • Student preparedness is key • Teaching Method • Faculty are coaches not lecturers • Very little new material is being introduced in this class • Students prepare and present homework • Most assignments require working in teams • Formal and informal oral presentations

  5. Course Components • Two modules: • 1. Teamwork • 2. Effective Written and Oral Communications • All modules must be passed to pass the class. • Failure in any module leads to failure in the class • Course Grade is average of Modules 1 and 2. • Both modules equally weighted • Plus and Minus Grades will be used

  6. Teamwork, Problem Solving & Critical Thinking • Work in teams on: • Teams Exercises • LDC Cases • Ethics cases • Grade will depend upon: • Peer Evaluation by Team • Instructor Observation and Team Work Plans • Individual Class Participation

  7. Written and Oral Communication • Written Assignments (Three) • Principal writer on an LDC case • Two other written assignments (TBA) • Oral Presentations (Formal and Informal) • As part of their team’s LDC case team presentation • As part of a challenge team for LDC case • Contribution to class via class participation • Informal participation in class exercises, readings, activities

  8. Tips to Succeed in Gateway • Complete all assignments before class • Invest in your team • Remember you are learning how to build an effective team • Plan ahead and budget time for class • Take LDC exams early and get them out of the way • Learn from each other • Take advantage of LDC subject area expertise within your team
