  5. Now let’s examine the text structure of Reading Passage A in a way of questions and answers.    The essay is made up of 4 parts with each part answering one question.

  6. Part 1(1--2): When we come up to the article, we read the title -Where Principles Come First. This naturally brings us the question: What are the principles? Part 1 is made up of 2 paragraphs: Paragraph 1 and Paragraph 2 telling us the principles of the Hyde School.

  7. Question 1(1--2): What are the principles? • Question 2(3--11): Are the Hyde principles accepted by other schools?

  8. Answer 1 The principles of the Hyde School:(paragraph1--2) • 1:Teach students themerit(美德) of suchvalues as truth, courage, integrity(正直)… and academic achievement naturally follows; • 2:the school has received considerablepublicity(关注)for its work with troubled youngsters.

  9. The principles of the Hyde School: • 3:And the school advocates that they prepare kids for a way of life bycultivating (培养)acomprehensive (全面的)set of principles that can affect all kids.

  10. Part 2(3--11): Since the principles of the Hyde School are somewhat different from other schools, the readers would wonder whether the principles are accepted by other schools. When we read on, we find the author tries to answer the question in Paragraphs 3 to 11.

  11. Failure in spreading the Hyde principles: The first Hyde public school program opened in September1992, which was suspended (中止)within months. .

  12. The reasons of failure Teachersprotested (抗议)program’s demandsand thestrain(负担)associated with more intense work(高强度的工作).

  13. The Hyde School principles being appreciated (Paras. 4-11) • The Hyde Foundation opened another program in a public high school in the suburbs (郊区)of New Haven, Connecticut. At the school the quest for truth is also widespread(推广). Students were asked to exchange their evaluations (评价)on theirclass performance.

  14. Answer2 (paragraph3) the efforts to make the Character First(品德第一)idea accepted by public schools

  15. A General Statement Supported by an Example • The text is a report about the Hyde School, telling us the priciples advocated by the school, how the priciples are accepted or rejected by other schools and students. One of the writing techniques used by the writer is a general statement suppored by an example .Now have a look at paragraphs 5 to 11.

  16. Para.5-11 As in Maine the quest for truth is also widespread at the school in Connecticut. In one English class, the 11 students spend the last five minutes in an energetic exchange evaluating their class performance for the day on a 1-10 scale. "I get a 10." "I challenge that. You didn't do either your grammar or your spelling homework." "OK, a seven." "You ought to get a six." "Wait, I put my best effort forth here." "Yeah, but you didn't ask questions today."

  17. .General statement: the quest for truth is also widespread at the school in Connectiuct • Example: • In what class:Inone English class • How many students:11 students • How much time:five minutes • What to do:an energetic exchange evaluating their class performance for theday on a 1-10 scale.

  18. Translate the following sentences into English. (Use”once”as a conjunction with the meaning “from the moment that”.) • Once the teachers agree to accept the new teaching program, they have to face the strain it puts on them.

(in the long run, worthwhile) • In the long run, it is worthwhile to pursue one’s study after graduating from university instead of going to work directly. (operate on) • As the schooloperate onthe Character First principle, moral values and academic achievements are stressed equally.

  20. That's all Thank you

  21. Part 3(12--16): Since the Hyde School principles have been rejected as well as appreciated, we would be wondering what the detailed principles or approaches are for the Hyde School This brings in for us Part 3

  22. Answer 3 The Hyde School’s approaches to education

  23. Para. 12 • The school assumes:1. Every human being has a unique potential (潜能)based on character, not intelligence or wealth. • 2. Conscience (良知)and hard work are valued. • 3. Success is measured by growth, not academic achievement. • 4. Students are required to take responsibility for each other.

  24. Para. 13 Courses and management: • 1. The school provides preparation for college, with a curriculum (课程)complete with English, history, math and science. • 2. All students are required to take performing arts and sports, and to provide a community service.  • 3. For each course, students get a grade for academic achievement and for “best effort”.

  25. Para 14 :A key ingredient (组成部分)in the Hyde mixture(综合教育) is requiring commitment and participation from parents. • Para 15 :Some public school parents find it difficult for them to participate.   Para 16 : Once the parents are convinced, Hyde’s requirement of parents’ participation should work well in public schools.

  26. Part 4(17--19) Now that we are clear about the Hyde School’s principles, the acceptability of the principles to public schools and what the school’s detailed principles are, we would naturally ask the question: Are these principles good or beneficial to the teachers as well as the students?

  27. Answer 4 Beneficial results for the teachers as well as the students:

  28. Beneficial results for the teachers (paragraph 17) : • 1. We really begin to focus on having a fruitful(富有成效的)relationship with each student, but not teacher to the material and then to the student. • 2. The teacher-student relationship is taken even further at Hyde: Faculty (全体教员)evaluations are conducted by the students.

  29. Beneficial results for the students (paragraphs 18 to 19) One example: Jimmy Di Battista, 19, who had seen his future as jail(监狱), not college, had been turned to the positive attitude. Now he plans to attend a university.

(in the long run, worthwhile) • In the long run, it is worthwhile to pursue one’s study after graduating from university instead of going to work directly. (operate on) • As the school operate on the Character First principle, moral values and academic achievements are stressed equally.

  31. Translate the following sentences into Chinese. • As in France, during the 1960s in the United States there was a cultural revolution. • Once he made up his mind to do something, there was no stopping him.

  32. The school stresses the idea that it is worthwhile for parents to participate in school activities together with their children. • At the end of the class, the teacher asked her students to spend the last five minutes in an energetic exchange evaluating their class performance for the day on a 1-10 scale.
