  1. Lecture 25 Mr. Sover 13 October 2009

  2. Quiz • Remove everything from your desk except for a pencil and sheet of looseleaf.

  3. Quiz • 1. How many ATP are produced by aerobic respiration? (I’m looking for the NET amount). • 2. Fall colors in foliage (leaves) are the result of what pigments (ie: red, yellow, orange) in chloroplasts? • 3. What is the name for the minimum amount of energy required to start a reaction? • 4. What is the chemical formula for glucose? (the chemical formula for water is H2O). • 5. What have you liked most about MUHS so far?

  4. Check Notecards

  5. Pass Back Quizzes

  6. Exam is Friday!

  7. Activation Energy • The amount of energy needed to start a reaction.

  8. Activation Energy • Don’t you dare cheer.

  9. Enzymes • Proteins that lower the activation energy required for a chemical reaction within a cell. • Allows reactions to occur at the normal temperatures of cells.

  10. Enzymes… • 1. are specific • 2. can be used over and over again

  11. Enzyme plus substrate fits together like a lock and key • Induced Fit Model

  12. Enzymes

  13. Energy for Cells • The energy available to do work is called free energy. • Reactions that requires energy is called what? • Reactions that create energy are called what? • What is energy in the cell in the form of? • A-P-P-P • Energy is released in ATP by breaking apart one of the bonds between the phosphate groups.

  14. How do animals get ATP?

  15. Aerobic Respiration • Requires what? • What is the equation for aerobic respiration?

  16. ATP is the Cell’s Energy Currency • It is the perfect amount of energy for cellular reactions.

  17. When you lift a heavy object above your head and you feel pain after a while…what is happening?

  18. What are the two different types of anaerobic processes?

  19. 1. alcoholic fermentation • 2. lactic acid fermentation • How many ATP are produced as a result of these types of fermentation (overall)?

  20. Photosynthesis • Light is a form of radiant energy. • Radiant energy travels in waves. • The distance between wave crests is… • When white light passes through a prism, the prism separates it into a range of colors. • The range of colors that make up white light is known as the visible spectrum

  21. Objects appear colored because the molecules in those objects absorb different wavelengths. • Chlorophyll reflects which colors?

  22. Does photosynthesis occur in all plant cells? • Which other living things can use photosynthesis in their cells? • What is the chemical equation for photosynthesis?

  23. Light Reactions • Convert light energy into chemical energy. • Occur across which part of the chloroplast? • Light excites electrons within the chlorophyll • Then they leave the chlorophyll and help bond phosphate to ADP. This creates what? • Water is split into hydrogen ions, electrons and oxygen • The electrons replace the original electrons which were in the chlorophyll

  24. Remember… • 1. Light energy is absorbed and converted to chemical energy in the bonds of ATP. • 2. Water is split into hydrogen ions, oxygen and electrons. • 3. Hydrogen ions from water are attached to carrier coenzymes for use in later steps of photosynthesis.

  25. The Calvin Cycle • Occurs across which part of the chloroplast? • Responsible for making what?

  26. IF time permits… • Work with your lab partner on questions 1-8 on page 164.

  27. Homework • STUDY for your test on Friday.
