What is Included in RP1.0? • Network Upgrade (prior to Day 1) • Teacher Laptops • MacBook running Mac OS10.6 & Windows 7 • Desktop Computer Lab • 30 iMacs running Mac OS 10.6 • 2 -Netbook Mobile Labs • 60 Dell Netbooks running Windows 7 • Network Server • Went from in-house individual server to HCPSS common server • Legacy Computers • All eMacs (and others) left in the school building running Mac O10.4.11 or earlier • Microsoft 2008/2007 Upgrade • Re-naming of Instructional Printers (on the nework) • Wireless Upgrade (within a few months)

  6. General Laptop Information • Teachers have administrative rights • Teachers can load approved and licensed software applications • Software Approval Process (SAP): http://doc.hcpss.org:8080/docushare/dsweb/View/Collection-20838

  7. General Care • Store in appropriate location • Avoid heat/cold • Keep the laptop in a secure location • Avoid touching the screen • Avoid completely draining the battery – if the battery is completely drained on the Windows side you will get a black error screen when you power up - select “start windows normally” • Wipe screen and keys with a soft anti-static cloth • No magnets near laptop • Note: please do not use the Magic Eraser because it can mar the finish on the laptop.

  8. Backing Up Files • In the event of malfunction, laptops will be re-imaged • You are responsible for backing up instructional files on a regular basis • Two methods: • 1) REQUIRED: Save to server • 2) OPTIONAL: Save to external source • Burn to CD/DVD • Copy to an external hard drive • USB device (not as your primary back-up)

Wireless Protocol • All new laptops are equipped with wireless cards, however your primary method of accessing the network is through Ethernet • Wireless networks must be approved by the Technology Officer • Wireless access is available through approved wireless networks within your building, or home wireless networks IT IS BEST TO TURN OFF THE WIRELESS WHEN YOU ARE PLUGGED IN WITH AN ETHERNET CORD

Bootcamp: Mac or Windows? • These new laptops will allow you to boot up in either the Mac or Windows operating system (OS) • Default for Elementary/Middle School: Mac 10.6 • Default for High School: Windows 7 • To switch to the other OS, hold down the Option key while starting your computer- click the arrow under the OS

Changes to Teacher Login • All staff and student accounts will use their Network Account • The Network Account has been referred to as your remote ASPEN at home login • High schools and administrators are currently using the Network Account This is the first step in a move toward a single sign-on.

  22. Network Account HCPSS is moving toward an Active Directory system meaning that one username and password can log the user into many different systems. Today everything listed above requires individual login credentials. You must be at school and on the network to change your passwords.

Network Home Folder • All teachers have a folder on the server called “network home” and is represented by their login name. • This server has 5GB of space and can only be accessed at school. • All students have a folder on the server called “network home” and is represented by their login name. • This server has 1GB of space and can only be accessed at school.

Changes to Student Login • High School: • Login remains the same • Middle School: • Login remains the same (except for a few duplicates in names from each school) • Elementary School: • Login will be similar to the current login.  The new login will add 2 letters to make all ES student logins unique across the school system • i.e. bw12s001 (bw=Bryant Woods)

  36. OS 10.6: Dock Teacher Dock Network Campus The docks have been “locked” to prevent deletion of the server folders. Teachers may add any application and delete the applications added. Student Dock Hand In & Hand Out
