Three IYCN Goals:

  • Improve infant and young child nutritional status

  • Increase HIV-Survival

  • Improve maternal nutritional status

IYCN will achieve these goals by identifying, scaling-up and institutionalizing:

  • Cost-effective interventions to improve breastfeeding, complementary feeding and caring practices for all children and those at high risk for HIV and other infections

  • Cost-effective interventions to improve maternal nutritional status

  • Develop public-private partnerships to increase the availability of high quality foods.

  • Increase national & donor commitment to improve infant and young child nutrition.

Implementation Approaches:

  • Demand driven

  • Increase the contacts mothers have with people who can provide advice on IYCF

  • Understand the barriers and facilitating factors to changing practices

  • Evidence-based messages

  • Solve barriers to changing practices

  • Involve family members including fathers and communities in solving the problem of malnutrition

  • Focus on preventing malnutrition through integrated, community based activities

  • Individualized counseling tailored to the caregiver’s situation and child’s needs

  • Two-way communication with client negotiating with the caregiver to try new practices and the client-provider plans to try new practices and follow-up
