The Impact Of Globalization on Participants Countries Group 3 : Sylvia, Tau,Parvin,Mitra,Chaudhary Team Leader : Sylvia Choo Reporter : Tau General consensus : Globalization is necessary and is here to stay Positive Effects Create jobs for some sectors – increase employment opportunities for others, more higher valued jobs for some countries Transfer of technology/ knowledge which is crucial for developing countries Increase employment opportunities for women (e.g Somoa), more gender equality More Trade amongst countries Increase workers solidarity - now face similar global issues and problems

The Impact Of Globalization on Participants Countries Negative Effects Leads to closing of small industries (e.g. Mass Production textile moves out from Singapore to low cost countries like China & India, Pakistan,Iran) Increase Privatisation in order to compete with international players (e.g. Nepal –Electricity Authority - loss of jobs for 4000 workers) Jobs are outsourced to other places / countries Increase in Social Problems ( need to provide for those who are unemployed) Employment Violations – MNC may not be aware of the local laws Union Membership Reduce because emerging trend of contract workers, part-time workers, knowledged workers who are more educated and independent

Workers may not be aware of their rights (e.g. migrant workers/contract workers) For outsourcing, companies are focusing on the core functions. May be cheaper to outsource some other functions Foreigners coming into your countries –security/social problems Workers are more educated and migrate to other countries

Strongly urge workers to go for training and education so that they can move in tandem with globalisation Review Legislations on the working conditions (e.g. part time working arrangement, social security protection) Global Network for Union – to keep in touch with other overseas unions on how they handle globalisation issues/problems (e.g Solicomm /Seminars) Review the Union Benefits to Retain Membership Encourage good Human Resource Practices
